Lotus Marie Brontz Age: 12 "I had always dreamed of seeing her. Cecilia is my sister, Dad. Please let me go. I beg of you. I want to see what she looks like that isn't in pictures or stories. I nee-" Lotus' eyes teared up in front of her father. His heart was breaking that much was known. His face red and lips pursed. He shook his head toward his daughter, his youngest as she fought to do something she needed to do. "No! You are forbidden. Why would I do that to you? You'll only be hurt. You've lived this long without, you will be fine. If you go against my wishes - Lotus, it's fake. It's a hologram, an image of someone they MADE to look like her. Probably talk like her, but it isn't here." His voice boomed out, shaking a hand and pointing a finger in the direction of her bedroom. Her face was solemn and as she watched his hand shaking with anger, probably hurt with the thought of his first born's image created by the very people that killed her in the first place. With an open mouth, hoping to get him to reconsider, she brought her lips together as tears rolled over them. Her thin upper lip began to disappear as she began to quiver in sadness and in a flash, she turned and dashed away. "I HATE YOU..." She bellowed and the moment she passed her doorframe, a raucous echoed throughout the house of wood meeting wood. Her mattress became her sanctuary. Even though tears fell freely it couldn't stop a knock at the door. It was soft, but she knew it wasn't her mother. She barely got out of bed and Jacob no longer lived at the residence. "Go away. I don't want to talk about it." She knew it could either be Gage or Jory. She hoped it would be the latter. "Lo. Come on." The voice outside the door whispered and she looked up from her pillow, sodden with her tears in such a short time. She leaned up and wiped her sorrows away to walk to the door. The moment she opened the door, she saw his face. He was giving her a goofy grin, but it was forced. It was quick how he instantly just wrapped his arms around his sister's frame and let her sob into his shirt. "Dad won't let me go to the museum. Calls it a disgrace to her memory. He won't go and he's not going to let us go either, Jory. I hate him. I hate him, Jory. Why does he hate me so much that he won't let me do this one thing. I never got to know her. I never got to see her like she was. You and Jacob did. Gage even, but I was months old... I don't remember her. All I see are pictures and stories... I want to see more than that. It's not fair." She cried, pouring her heart out as Jory shushed her and petted her hair. "Sis, it's okay. Dad's just angry. Always has been. It's been a hard life for all of us. Especially Jacob. You have no idea what he went through growing up or me. We understand your need to see her - whatever form you want to see her in." He hugged her vigorously and swayed slightly before putting her an elbow's length away. "I'll take you, okay? He won't question me. I only want what you want, Lotus. I want you to see our sister. Our sweet, Cecilia. But you listen - it's a hologram. It's not real. I'll be with you though." Lotus' eyes lit up with joy and a now happy hug embraced her older brother. He squeezed her gently before he nodded to her. "Be down in the kitchen in ten minutes. I'll figure a way to go to town and cart you along with me. Dry your eyes." He disappeared through the door and Lotus watching everything unfold as she went from red eyes to a smile. Downstairs, she peeked through the doorframe curious as to what Jory had planned. Gage sat at the table and while his mouth opened for a gigantic bite of some bread, manners wasn't his strong suit, he openly spat out words. "What's your problem Lotus." He snickered at her. "You shouldn't have said that to dad." Shrugging her shoulders, she watched as Jory had searched the fridge for something before something shattered and she jumped as their father's voice rang out. "What the hell was that? Jory? Gage? What the hell did you break?" His monstrous voice called out and his presence knocked into Lotus as he came to survey the scene. She shifted her weight and watched their father rub his face in frustration. "Jory... WHAT HAPPENED." Jory's eyes twitched and Lotus watched him stammer with his words and become quiet before their father huffed heavily. "What? Not talking? Gage, get your ass over there and clean that up. Jory - best go get a replacement before your mother knows you broke her good glassware." "Sorry dad, it was an accident..." Jory looked at Lotus and then their father. "... Lotus, will you go with me? You can carry it back so I don't drop it. Okay?" He played it off and without a response from their father, he left, leaving a grumbling Gage getting up from his chair and grabbing something to clean up the shattered glass. Jory took Lotus's hand and lead her outside. Lotus's heart soared the moment they had escaped their house. The drab way their home was run since their sister's death was a heavy burden. It was Jory though who seemed to keep the peace in the house and for once, he wasn't seen in the presence of his boyfriend. As she and Jory walked, she began to wonder what he was thinking as his eyes seemed to be fixated on the ground without looking up to see where he was going. "What's wrong, Jory?" She questioned him and he immediately took notice of her. "Nothing, I'm just worried about what we are going to see in there. Ya know? I remember how she was, her mannerisms. The way she spoke and everything, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to see her ghost just yet. You know I don't even go to her gravestone. I can't pass through those gates to stand near her. You might have to do this yourself. I'm afraid, I'm not strong enough." "Jory- you don't have to. I understand. Dad might not, but I know you do. We - we are connected in a different way like you and Cecilia was. I can't explain it though. I think I have a connection to Cecilia. I don't even remember her, but I want to." She explained to Jory. Silence hung over their heads until they had made it to the museum. Once inside, Jory hesitated. "Let's do this together, please, Jor? I don't want to do this alone. I think - you need to see her again. I think it'll help." She persuaded. He nodded to her and as the machine blinked in front of them, Jory answered the questions only she wished she knew. "Cecilia Brontz. Age fourteen. District eight." His fingers shook as he clicked different things. Different categories and districts and ages were asked. A separate column for who killed them came up as well and with a heavy breath, he clicked her name. A whizzing noise came about in front of them, lights dimming just enough that the hologram program began to come alive. In front of Lotus and Jory, an image began to manifest. It was more of a ghost, but it was in color and she began to look around confused. Her gentle features looking around and at the two people in front of her. She stopped where she was and brought her hands together in front of her body. Interlocking fingers, Cecilia beamed at the two. "Jory Brontz. Hello. It has been a long time. Who is this you have brought with you? Do you have a girlfriend?" Cecilia's soft voice dreamed out and she waved to Lotus, bending at the palm in greeting. "C... Cecilia? This is our baby sister. Cecilia, this is Lotus." Cecilia's hologram stopped and her head tilted. "Lotus? This can't be Lotus. Lotus is a baby. My baby sister who is four months old. This pretty girl is much too old to be my baby sister. Who is she?" The hologram spoke out again. "Cecilia - It's me. It's Lotus. Your baby sister, yes, but I've grown up. I'm twelve. I'm twelve now and I am so - I can't believe I'm seeing you. You are... I wish I could have known you." Lotus's eyes welled up. "Lotus Brontz, do not cry. I can't believe how big you are. Has it really been twelve years?" Cecilia questioned and turned her attention to Jory. "How old are you now, Jory?" "I'm almost eighteen... Cecilia - are you real? Are you really just a hologram? I can see through you, but you look just like her. You sound identical to her voice." Jory's voice caught in his throat no longer able to keep his calm demeanor. "I can't believe you left us. You left all of us." Anger seemed to be playing on his voice and Lotus watched her big brother react to this. She put a hand to his shoulder and tried to coax him to look at her. He kept his gaze steadfast at the image of his dead sister in front of him. "YOU ABANDONED US. YOU ABANDONED LOTUS AND JACOB AND GAGE AND ... ME!" Jory tried to stop the tears that wanted to fall. He grimaced and jerked away from Lotus, walking up to the hologram. "You were my best friend. You promised you would always be there for us. It's not your fault, I know, but you - you..." "I am your big sister. It was my job to protect you. If you are eighteen, then Jacob is aged out. You are almost there. Gage - Lotus" She looked at Lotus with a smile and then back to Jory. "I loved you all so much. I am glad you are alive. I'm glad that you are in good health, Lotus. I only want the best for you. Remember that song I used to sing to you, Jory? Remember the violin." "I do remember the violin. It's broken, but I want to put it back together, but I can't without you." Jory backed up. Lotus looked at him and then to the hologram. Cecilia's facial features turned and sadness appeared. Jory disappeared through the door leaving Lotus alone to communicate with the ghost. She walked up beside her. She looked at her features, watched her smile. The freckles on her nose matched her own. Her lips were almost identical to hers and she took note of their hair lengths matching. The same color of chestnut fell beside their shoulders. "Cecilia, what does it feel like to die?" |
