You're born as the eldest son to nobodies. It's something never referred to as an insult, but just straight up fact, because it's true, and why deny it? Your parents were amongst the lowest of the lower class, two miners with nothing to their name but the clothes on their back and a small hut on the edge of town, but that did little to deter them from creating a family and maintaining a life for themselves.

It's the reason that whenever you find yourself in a rare debate with your peers and the topic of love comes up, every single time you simply smile and point to your parents as an example that happy endings can and do exist in that front.

It was a dream of both of theirs to have a child, living situation be damned. And you were the product of that love. So who were you to deny such an existence?

As a kid, you were adventurous and outgoing, to the point that even today you wonder might have happened if your lot in life had turned out differently.

It's not something you dwell on much, but it does cross your mind from time to time. Though you remember nothing of the incident itself, it's a story that both your mama and papa tell anytime you ask, sometimes with a straight face and an even voice, and other times with an aversion to eye contact and just the faintest tremor lacing their words.

How there'd been a group of neighborhood children much like yourself, the poor boys and girls from poor mining families who have nothing better to do with their time than spend it in each other's company and let emotions fly as rampant as a hailstorm. How one day such a scuffle between two older boys had led to a maelstrom of chaos that you had found yourself caught up in. How you hadn't panicked, for situations like this were commonplace enough that you'd since grown accustomed to them.

How what usually ended in a fistfight escalated, till one of the boys grabbed a fallen brick from a house halfway through the stages of disrepair and tossed it at his opponent. How the attack had missed the intended target. How it had not missed you.

How it was a wonder you'd even survived at all.

How you might have died right then and there had you not been brought to a medical woman in record time, for one of the kids' moms had learned the tricks of the trade back when Two had housed a medical industry on top of everything else. How it had been pure luck that your skull hadn't fractured, how your eardrum had taken the brunt of the force.

You would live, but you would never hear out of that ear again.

There were three ways to escape the poverty line in Two. One was to strike lucky in the mines, find a rare deposit of metal or gemstones worth so many zeroes that the vast, vast majority could only dream of. This was a rare, rare event, and with the mines depleted after decades of excavation, was seen as more than a pipe dream than anything else. The second was to enlist your children in the Peacekeeping force. It was a long, tough, grueling profession that took away twenty years of any applicant's life, but was enough to maintain a living wage for one and benefits for any chosen loved ones to the point that there was no need to worry about when the next meal was coming.

The third was to become a victor in the Hunger Games.

Your parents refused to entertain the thought of entering the mines or joining the Keeper force. You were their beloved son, and you deserved more than to waste your days in a backwater like Twelve or breaking your back in the mines like they had. Live or die, you would live a better life than they would, even at their own expense.

But if there was one thing that your newfound handicap in the form of a busted ear and partial hearing allowed you, it was a chance to shut up, become observant, and watch the world around you in a new light. And for all intents and purposes you were not stupid - by age ten you understood enough about the world to know that your family was struggling, and that your parents were using everything they had and more to your benefit.

A more selfish or heartless child would have taken advantage of such a thing. But that wasn't you, wasn't in your nature. You were determined to make your own way in life, forge your own path. And you sure as hell wouldn't let your own parents work themselves to death for your benefit.

Luckily, there was a Career center only a couple miles from where you lived. Unluckily, the trainer who answered the door took one look at you, laughed in your face, and told you to come back once you'd proven yourself worth his time.

It was meant as an insult. Something dismissive.

You never were that good at getting the hint.

So you took it seriously instead.

You'd pick fights with the local street rats, the next wave of the very same that had resulted in you losing part of your hearing in the first place. You'd suffer bruises, cuts, even a broken nose once, but never once did you give up your resolve. Soon, you were dealing out as many wounds as you received, and even began winning some.

Until your parents, worried sick by having to patch you up every other day from one fight or another, put a calm but stern stop to that behavior.

So you improvised. There was no shortage of heavy rocks and bricks and the like around your home, and you had enough of a rudimentary understanding of how weight training worked that you created your own pseudo regime. It was about as effective as one could expect from an eleven year old with no background could imagine, but it was a start.

By the time you turned twelve, you felt ready enough for another shot at confronting the big, scary trainer that had turned you away. You saw the blank stare on his face turn into realization when he recognized that the boy with dirt on his face and an odd tilt to his head was the very same ten year old he had turned away two years ago.

And oh, he tried to turn you away again. But you kept showing up, day after day - sometimes looking almost professional, other times with bloody knuckles and mud streaked across every inch of skin.

Until one day he relented, giving you a chance to fight against one of their legacies, a twelve year old who had been training almost since the day he could walk, with the ultimatum that if you got your ass kicked you wouldn't be allowed to step foot near the academy again.

You didn't win. Even the most tenacious of street kids didn't stand a chance against someone with actual, professional training. But you didn't get your ass kicked, either, and in the end that proved to be enough.

Life's different now. Good, even, if a little rough around the edges.

Your chance wasn't wasted - far from it, as you found yourself turned into one of the academy's most dedicated students. Handicap be damned, opponents both new and returning would find out that just because you might not hear as well as they could didn't mean you were someone to be underestimated. Hey, even the brooding, quiet kid in the corner could be a force to be reckoned with when it came down to it.

But for the first time in your life, you find yourself torn. Two has gone through a notorious dry spell never seen before in its entire history, with the last victor coming home years before you were even born. No one, from the several Hammerfells to Jessica Braun to Cassiopeia Shaw, had claimed a victor crown since Cricket Antoinette. And though you're steadfast on making a better life for your family, you're not stupid, either, and throwing your life away, while giving them one less mouth to feed, would not be worth it.

And besides, you have connections now. Friends. A boy named Creed. Extra incentive to come home, maybe - or extra incentive to never leave in the first place.

You still have time. Eighteen may have come and gone, but your final reaping still has yet to arrive. But months are nothing when eighteen years are stacked on top of one another, and you know you'll have to make the final decision soon.

You only hope that when the gauntlet comes to pass that you end up making the correct one.
