mom told me not to listen to grandma.

but her stories captured me. she told me of the capitol's betrayal of the districts, of the rebellion she had supported as a young girl. she passed away when i was young, but her stories still stuck with me, at least for a little while.

every time i would mention one of grandma's stories, mom tried to force all thoughts of them out of my head.

i would ask about the ruins they left districts in, according to grandma.

'don't listen to her. look at what the capitol has given us,' mom would say, gesturing to the glistening district, our luxurious apartment a gift from the capitolites mom made such pretty jewelry for.

i would mention the stories of the first games in wonderment, wondering how the tributes could have ever just stood around.

'they didn't understand the honor it is to be crowned victor,' she would say before enrolling me in a career program.

and so i became a career. it wasn't long until, like my peers, my heart became set on my crown. every time i close my eyes i can imagine the excitement as i leave the arena, the highest honor being awarded to me.

and yet, every time i strike an opponent in training, i think of the blood, the fear from grandma's stories. sometimes, i can't help but wonder if what im doing is truly such a honor, or if it is just a cruel oppressor laughing at our pain. then i look at everything the capitol has given us, and i remember my crown.
