Can't catch her bringing a fella home without listing at least ten of his uncles and cousins first, neither. Gotta know he comes from good stock, or so they like to say. Ripred forbid she shack up with the great-great-grandson of a hog thief.

Tector once knocked me on my ass for stealing from his stash — just a few ounces, nothing crazy. He said he was going easy on me, but that thick skull only has one setting. Hard. I didn't fuck with his shit again, but I still made a buck for my troubles. Tried to cheat a few yellow bellies while I was at it, but that didn't go too well. Diamond Joe got the smooth talkin' gene, not me.

Came home with a busted lip and a swollen eye, and my brothers hollered like raccoons in a landfill. Not like I could say it wasn't funny; I had to thaw out my dinner on my face that night. It was a damn good cut of steak, too. It was just odd — always havin' to fight my own battles. Guess maybe it added character. Paw said it would put hair on my chest, but the old bastard can hardly see as it is. I didn't correct him.
