I'm shaking. It's the shock. The rage. Both. I'm furious that they touched her, that they tried to rip her from us - that they forced me into the firing lines. That I pretended this wasn't going to happen. That I need my flask and I left it at home like a fucking idiot, adrenaline arms, swallowing up the explosions from the mines we crawled out of.

Breathe in, deep, god I sound awful. Breathe out - too fast, breathe in again, too fast. Jesus Christ I need a drink, I need to pull it together, to stop biting my bottom lip, to stop wanting to cry. I sit on my hands and I inhale through my nose, exhale slowly, slowly out of my mouth.

I want to scream. I want to scream and throw my hands against the wall until my fingers break and my hands bleed and the plaster caves in like chalk. But I need my hands now, so I keep them prisoned under my own weight. They cut hands off so easily in the arena. Best keep them in shape for as long as I'll have them.

Inhale, exhale, figure it out. Sid will take over the shop. Jamie will keep doing what Jamie does. Eli will have to step up, somehow - keep Bailey in line. Saoirse and Justin, they can't know. Noah, too. Every time I think of her muttering into my chest I have to breath long and hard, shake her off, keep it together. They'll be here soon. Dad would've paid for extra time. A minute, five more. I've got to keep it together. I'm good at that. I'm good at fixing shit.

Can't fix this, but at least I can fix the aftermath while I'm still here.

The door handle turns, inhale through my nose. Exhale through my teeth. I'm Jules Monaghan. I'm Jules Monaghan. I'm Jules Monaghan.

Leave it up to one James Monaghan to figure out the way into the Justice Building without having to go through the front door.

It took him fourteen minutes, and the removal of a Peacekeeper who pissed him off's right eyeball, but with the right help and the right blind spot, between one minute and the next he was crawling through the window to the room that Juliet was being held in, blood on his shoes and on his hands and a fire raging in his chest.

He didn't think she would come with him back through the window, but he had to try.

"What the fuck were you doing, Juliet Monaghan," he says, mouth a flat line, not having anywhere to direct his anger except directly at her. The doorknob turns, and as the door opens, Jamie ducks down.

"Your first visitor will be here in two minutes," a Peacekeeper says curtly. "You'll have five minutes."

And when the door closes, Jamie charges straight for his twin sister.

"I could have gotten her out," he nearly spits, grabs both of her cheeks and wants to literally twist her neck until it snaps he sees so much red. "I could have found a way, a double, or I could have fucking stolen her out of here and paid the right guy and we'd get the fuck out of Twelve and find a way to start over in a new district, but this—" he lets her go, extends both hands out to the side. "You volunteered," he is trembling with anger, unbridled and uncontrolled for a rare show of emotion. "You panicked and made it a whole goddamned show, gave those rat bastards in the Capitol exactly what they wanted, and now the whole fucking nation knows your face. I don't think I can fix this."

If she says the word though, he will drag her through that window. He will move heaven and earth to get her out of this. He will take every one of his siblings, leave behind his soldiers and his empire and the shadows that he loves so much and he will make them all disappear in the woods.

If she says so, he will find a way.

He’s what I feared the most.

“Get off me-“ and Jamie keeps on yelling, he’s always been the anger to my calm. “Jamie get off of me-”

He does. But he makes damn sure he knows he’s pissed about it. Words like knives and he cuts me down, talks like a mad man. Acts like a god - perhaps that’s fair, our parents raised us as such. Maybe it’s why I volunteered, because I still think I can fix it. We both think we can, in our own ways - it’s just noise now. I know what he’s saying even if I can’t quite register it.

“Don’t be an idiot, Jamie,” a breath. Barely a whisper. I don’t have the strength to yell back, chest full of static and his rage. “This isn’t smuggler shit. This isn’t about the shop. They...”

Deep breath, I can’t even look at him.

“This is bigger than you and your boys. They’d kill you on site, and take Noah anyway, and we’d be left without you both and it’d all go to shit and...”

It’s my turn to rant and rave, tell the truths to the lies we’ve been feeding ourselves all our lives. Maybe it’s my fault for letting him run loose, maybe it’s Mom’s fault for teaching us how to operate in the shadows - maybe this is our penance. Remove one of us, take out a screw and watch the whole damn house fall down.

I stand up, the room tips - sit back down again. Gnaw at my knuckles, wring my fingers, gather my words. I don’t care if he doesn’t want to listen to my reason. I do care that our last conversation might be ranting and raving and all I have to blink back my tears because all I want him to do is hug me, promise me he’ll look after them, tell me it’ll be okay.

But we’re not those kind of twins. And there’s no time left to try and start.

“I did it to save her. Noah, James. They’d ruin her. And I did it to save you, and Sid and the rest of them - because no-one else would have taken her place and like hell am I going to apologise for that.”

Breathe in, deep, remember how to exhale.

“So I-“ a cracked confession. “I’m not asking you to fix it. You don’t...”

Inhale, my voice is hollow and full of regret. Both and neither. Perhaps it’s all a dream.

“Just look after them when I’m gone.”

Everything in his body is telling him to fight her on it, telling him that he can get her out of here, that this is an impossible job but he's a guy for impossible jobs, was built for them and on them. A Seam kid who wasn't from the Seam, who never needed to set foot there if he didn't want.

But Jules is sitting there, rubbing her hands raw with the force she is trying to contain in her bones, and Jamie can't quite fide the fire he needs to explode.

"I know why you did it," he hisses, turns his back to her and goes back to the window. He drags both the leather gloves off of his hands, and under the fabric, his hands are damp with sweat, anger and anxiety and anticipation burning something terrible through his body. Jules keeps talking, and Jamie's chin falls to his chest and he has to lean his body weight on the window frame, hold himself up like that or he thinks that he might fucking pass out from too much adrenaline and anger.

"Jules," he's about to start, but then she's still speaking, and she asks him to protect them.

He's still there, blood staining his gloves and the tips of his boots and there's a knife with a Peacekeepers blood on it in his pocket, but she's there, telling him to stand down.

She's there, giving in, so he has to too.

So he turns around, and stares at her hard with those bitter-coffee eyes that they share. If you looked closely, you might just see them glitter. Looking at his twin sister now, he wants to say something, but he has to hesitate. The knowledge that he might never see her again hung over him heavy in the air. A boy and a girl from the Merchant class, become something so much worse, something so much better, something stronger and fiercer and something like Twelve hadn't seen before. What bound them together wasn't anything so trivial as greed or desperation, it was blood, it was sacrifice, it was their shared breaths.

You could win, he thinks, but he bites his tongue. It's not in his capacity to be supportive, to be kind, but he wants to try. She is his Helen and he is her thousand ships, and she deserves better than a platitude.

"You know, I'd die for them, too," he says, and then he arches his eyebrows, high and mocking. "But I'll do you one better and kill for them instead."

And then he shoves his bloody gloves in jacket pocket and takes the strides to his sister, pulls her up and wraps his arms around her shoulders.

Momentarily, all she could hear was the sound of the crisp winter air whistling through her nose. Sidonie did not like quiet; she liked to hear her family talking and laughing and customers casting greetings that were sometimes warm, sometimes not. Yet, she would settle for not having to put up with any more chaos right now. She was not completely composed yet, but as she absently rubbed at her burning throat, she realized that she wouldn't have to fake composure if she didn't say much at all.

The walk to the Justice Building wasn't very long but it felt like an eternity. Sidonie knew where Noah was, but she wasn't sure about the rest of her siblings, probably streaming from their respective areas of the crowd. I just want us all to be together.

At the front, they asked for a name, and she replied, "Sidonie Monaghan," and they furrowed their brows in thought which made her wonder if they wanted Jules' name instead. Regardless, soon enough she was on her way to the room where her sister was being held, and soon she was there, and Jules was there, and James was there, and they were together.

Sidonie instinctively rushed to embrace her siblings but paused inches away from them at the sight of the blood.

"Jamie," she rasped. "Did you hurt yourself?"

Damn.

He really was a Monaghan after the shit he just pulled to end up outside the door, peering into the twin's conversation. Doubles, as if the capitol would have believed some trickery over the truth. Eli may not be the sharpest of people, but even he knew the capitol had the hunger games stuff locked down. There's no tricking the all seeing eye that was President Snow and his madness. After all, it's why so many Laws get picked, unlike the Monaghans. It's all a game to the capitol. A game their family was now being thrown into.

"Jamie,"

Sidonie's shown up to this shit show.

"Did you hurt yourself?"

That's his cue to appear in the doorway, without the smile. The pounding's gone down after the bile left his chest. There's no fixing this family. Every single kid had some sort of problem of their own. No need to hide it behind a wall. Eli's seen it all. He's not stupid. He's more intuitive than they probably realize. As a kid, before the negativity took his life away, there was a time where he watched the games over and over again. Memorizing the faces of the Laws, the Mortuus, and all the other tributes from Twelve. Alcohol had taken a lot of his life away. The realization hurts more than any of his recent realizations.

"No."

Elliot Monaghan knew his sister.

And the words from her lips were not the Juliet he grew up around.

"You aren't going to sit there as if you're already gone, Jules."

Arms crossed with the flare of a fire in his chest as if he were going to burn the whole building down. Jamie could be injured for all he cared. His brother was notorious for injuring himself, especially when pissed off. Eli pushes off the doorframe and into the room, where he stands as tall as he can. No smile, no jokes, and no alcohol upon his lips. The most sober he's been in the past month and a half or so. Words from his lips floating in the air as he glares to the twins and eases his gaze when he reaches Sidonie.

"Listen. No matter what shit you'd pull Jamie, the capitol would know. So, that leaves only one option from here."

A deep breath as he looks back to his sister. His sister who kept him in line all those years of his problems. His sister who didn't bother him with the business because she had known he didn't care one bit about it. His sister who was the most reliable person in their family. One day, he was going to regret not telling her how much he loved her, but for now, he'd have to be the voice of reason.

"Your only option is to play their game. Be the Jules we all know you are. Play their game, but make sure to prove to them why you deserve to be their victor. Kill the people they want you to. Show them not to fuck with the Monaghans."

Slowly, he leans against a desk in the center of the room.

"If you want to look out for us, that's the best option because between you and me, hot head over here won't be able to do that."

No smile.

"That's the only option left."
