The Experiments (Throughout)
In the eight years since Amethyst has last taken the helm of Head Gamemaker, she grew ever more frustrated at getting overlooked by her various peers, to the point that she began testing the very boundaries of what was possible and ethical in the way of muttation creation. Creating scores of new and failed experiments with each passing year, her latest project in the days leading up to the 84th was her newest and most dangerous set of experiments yet. Experiments #621, #622, and #623 were not quite triplets but siblings nevertheless. Standing at eight feet tall each, recognizable by pale purple skin and glittering amethyst eyes, the trio were the grand result of combining chimp DNA with a half dozen other muttations, the former giving them a cunning intelligence unseen in the vast majority of their predecessors while the latter gave them their powerful, deadly gifts. Though Amethyst hadn’t quite deemed them ready for the Games due to their unpredictability, the Experiments had other ideas, bursting into the arena by way of the Cornucopia, and after briefly sparring with each other, are now on the hunt for blood.
Each Experiment is distinctly unique from each other and has their own abilities. Their respective profiles are as follows:
Experiment #621: Tribute eater, ship wrecker, the Kraken was a major influence in the construction of #621. His arms are long and handless, covered in small razor-like bumps. Unlike the other two, #621 is able to comfortably move in water with great speed and ease. Drawing from the Loch, #621 gained an extra set of arms and a set of incredibly sharp teeth. This brutal water-dweller was given a pair of weak wings from the inclusion of Empusae DNA, though mostly they are for show. Were his wings to have been a little bigger or a little stronger, perhaps he might have been able to fly. Instead, he simply spreads them in a show of strength, making him look like some twisted version of the angels from the old stories.

Not edible. Not poisonous. 80 hp. Whip Rolls. Attacks twice per turn.
Experiment #622: The second experiment, the middle child, #622 is every bit the horror of his older and younger siblings. This was thanks in no part due to the fact that he was pieced together with the hind legs, sprinting capabilities, and raw stamina of Amethyst’s beloved hellcats, the projectile storing and reloading capabilities of the 70th Cornucopia, and a twisted face locked in a perpetual grin courtesy of the brand new Piranhaha DNA. Whereas #621 has his aquatic ability and #623 her almost elegant, glittering skin, #622 makes up for the lack of these gifts with surprising agility and an uncanny ability to strike a target from tens of yards away with one of his built in projectiles. Whereas the other two fully embody the beast aspect of their heritage, this mutt taps more into his primate ancestry, complete with a rather sadistic tendency to toy with his prey before going in for the final kill.

Not edible. Not poisonous. 80 hp. Bow Rolls. Attacks twice per turn.
Experiment #623: In the shadows, the final Experiment looks much like her brethren: purple and ominous. It’s only in sunlight that her true beauty is on display. #623’s skin is smooth, hard, and strangely cold in this sweltering arena. Using the Kodama’s opalescent flesh allowed Amethyst to trap fire within. When #623 attacks, a glittering fire pattern ignites over her skin, kindling, warming, spreading all over her hard flesh until she spews forth the flame. Such fire-breathing power is a gift from Flemeth herself. To balance when she attacks, #623 also has a heavy spiked tail. Her final genetic gift is from the fiery Donn Cualigne: a crown of purple horns, which have grown so long, they intertwine completely.

Piranhaha (Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
In truth, there was little that needed to be improved on the original design of these fearsome fish in order to pass inspection for the Games. The final product is nearly identical to its ancestor, albeit containing twice the size and a penchant for long, loud, raucous laughter whenever it lunges for the kill. While the noise is downright disturbing, it also makes attacking anything out of the water nigh impossible, for it is relatively easy to hear them coming.

Not poisonous. Not edible. 15 HP. Knife Rolls
Mercury Man-Trap (Cornucopia, Canopy Village, Hungry Jungle, Termite Towers, Aerial Root Bridge, Pineapple Hectare)
Like with several different forms of muttations, the Man-Traps are simply improving on an already ideal design - in this case, taking a rare form of carnivorous plant and supersizing them to make them a threat to even the most physically imposing of tributes. While those that have recently fed may intimidate with their imposing stature, extending up to twelve feet into the air, the more ravenous and cunning of these plants may very cleverly disguise themselves on the floor of their habitat - ready and waiting for an unlucky specimen to wander into their jaws.

Not poisonous. Not edible. 30 HP. Special Mechanic: If it lands two DGs in a row, it clamps down on its target with its jaws, dealing 5 damage each turn as it attempts to digest its target and also preventing it from attacking anyone else. (see Sinking Worms for examples)
Macaw (Canopy Village, Hungry Jungle, Aerial Root Bridge, Pineapple Hectare, Floodplain Forest)
Naturally beautiful, social birds, these are a legacy species from before the Uprising. These jungle-dwellers form societies not unlike human’s, with lifelong mates and a flock of family and friends. The Capitol hasn’t tinkered with them much. Their plumage is a bit more vibrant, perhaps a little iridescent, and their peaks blunter. Despite these modifications, rest assured that the Macaws can still make themselves known. They’ve even been known to shout "Hello!" upon attack.

Not poisonous. Edible. 12 HP, often attacks as a pair. Blunt rolls.
Anaconda (Canopy Village, Hungry Jungle, Aerial Root Bridge, Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
Heavy, bone crushing, patient. The Anaconda is a monstrous muttation, able to blend in with any jungle environment. Its sinuous body, which can be up to forty feet long, is covered in green, black and brown scales. The Anaconda is a solitary creature, needing to eat frequently to sustain itself. It prefers to lurk along waterways, but you might be surprised by how far it forages in search of something delicious. Beware when you hear its hiss; it can kill as easily by swallowing or strangling its prey. Strangely, as the snake coils itself around you, you might find yourself humming a tune you’ve heard before, except you can’t remember what comes after "my anaconda don’t…"

Not poisonous. Not edible. 45 HP. Whip rolls.
Brush Maned Tamarin (Throughout)
Rarely do combinations of animal and plant DNA go as planned, but the unexpected result of joining a Golden Tamarin with Monkey Brush Vine was almost better than the initial intention. The golden fur of the tamarin melded beautifully with the copper-red flowers that ringed its neck. A long prehensile tail was extended and made whip-like by the vine DNA. Occasional leaves can be seen poking through the fur, but there is more animal DNA than plant in this mutt. Completely at ease in the forest, the Brush Maned Tamarin can rest for extended periods of time simply living off of the plant-life around it thanks to the Monkey Brush Vine’s parasitic tendencies.

Not poisonous. Not edible. 15 HP. Knife Rolls, Whip Rolls.
Giant Capyphant (Termite Towers, Pineapple Hectare, Braided River)
A combination of a capybara and a giant anteater created a creature the size of a very large dog with a ridiculously long head and nose. It has an equally long tail, which is quite fluffy. The length of the face is counteracted by the rotund body it stands on, but don’t be fooled. This thing may look harmless and cute but the curved claws on its front paws can tear deep into trees. Running for the water won’t save you either, these beasts are equally at home swimming around. Its fur is designed to shed water so despite the excess levels of hair it doesn’t sink. Thankfully, they mostly resort to eating ants and termites, so aren’t actively aggressive; until you get too close.

Not poisonous. Edible (Large Game). 25 HP. Knife Rolls, Blunt Rolls.
Armored Sloths (Canopy Village, Hungry Jungle, Aerial Root Bridge, Floodplain Forest)
The sad thing about the Armored Sloth is that it actually works exactly like it's designed to. Why on earth the Capitol scientists wanted to combine two of the slowest creatures is beyond anyone, but it does its job: that is, it drops out of the trees and onto the heads of whoever is passing by below. Their shells and tough, scaly skin protect the Armored Sloths as they fall and their sharp claws make a good defense once they are on the ground. The trouble is, the sloths are exceedingly slow and can only make one attack in the time most other creatures make two.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 55 HP. Knife Rolls, Blunt Rolls, Attacks every other round.
Crocacondas (Hungry Jungle, Pineapple Hectare, Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
The Crocaconda is a very large snake with the head of a crocodile. Its coloration is that of murky water, allowing it to blend in to its natural habitat. Its sleek muscular body is great for swimming and quick movement in the water, although it is cumbersome on land. The Crocaconda was used for attacking and harassing small boats close to the coast or in rivers. It is able to get close to the boat unnoticed and go right over the side to pull people into the water. The large mouth and stomach of the Crocaconda, coupled with their exceedingly slow metabolism, in theory, made it a good way for the Capitol to transport secret goods from point A to point B; however, the reptiles were not very good at getting to where the Capitol wanted them, often picking fights with other Crocacondas or getting sidetracked to snack. It is possible that some Crocacondas still have useful items stored in their digestive tract, but to find out would require them to be killed — no easy feat, considering their sharp teeth and tough skin.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 35 HP. Knife Rolls.
Dart Jaguars (Throughout)
Like many Capitol experiments, these beautiful mixes of jaguar and poison dart frog didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to. The idea was to create huge cats that could not only rip rebels to pieces, but also poison anyone who attempted to fight back. Unfortunately, no way could be found to make the cats excrete poison; the meat is inedible, and you’d better stay away from their bodily fluids, but their skin is safe to touch. They also lost the advantage of the jaguar’s camouflage; though their base coat is still tan, their spots have taken on the brilliant jewel-like colors of the frogs, making them gorgeous but easy to spot. Simple external contact with their poison is enough to paralyze any tribute for several hours; if it gets into your body, a painful death will follow within half an hour. (You probably won't make it that long, though, because most victims get torn apart and eaten long before that.)
Poisonous. Not edible. 30 HP. Knife Rolls.
Macromantula (Throughout)
The intent was to create a larger species of spider, one that would spin thicker, stronger silk that could be used by the Capitol for various purposes. Capitol scientists were able to achieve this with the genes of a normal tarantula and some growth hormone; however, rather than the house cat-sized spider they’d been aiming for, they’d ended up with a massive brute of an arachnid, as tall as a small elephant with a leg span of over ten feet. These beasts were untamable; they would encase their caregivers in thick webs of silk, then inject their lethal poison into their bloodstream, killing them within the hour. After seeing how serious the problem was, the Capitolites decided that these creations could not be allowed to live; they managed to kill most, but some of the Macromantulas escaped into the wild, and continue to multiply deep within the darkest forests of Panem.
Poisonous. Not edible. 30 HP. Knife Rolls, Whip Rolls, Blunt Rolls.
Crocolisk (Hungry Jungle, Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
By taking the ferocity and the size from the alligator and combining it with the sleek black scales and venom of a cottonmouth, Capitol scientists have created a more lethal cousin to the komodo dragon. They can grow up to 15 feet in length and have traded in their dark green leathery skin for sleek black scales that don't dry out as quickly. They also grow six-inch spikes on their tails, which can be used as a weapon along with their crushing jaws and poisonous fangs.
Poisonous. Not edible. 20 HP. Knife Rolls, Spiked Blunt Rolls.
Riverbats (Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
At first glance, this river otter/vampire bat hybrid appears to have inherited nothing from its flying ancestor - at about three and a half feet from head to tail, with a thick brown pelt that repels water, this creature appears to be almost an exact replica of the traditional otter. There are a few differences, though. For one, this muttation has a pair of sharp fangs that, although not poisonous, can still inflict a pretty mean bite. For another, these mutts are indeed blind, as are bats at birth. Also in common with bats, though, the Riverbat has the uncanny ability to echolocate, particularly beneath the water - tributes, be wary of stepping in, for a Riverbat will more likely than not find you and decide your flesh would be a tasty treat.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 20 HP. Knife Rolls.
Night Harpy (Cornucopia, Canopy Village, Termite Towers, Aerial Root Bridge, Pineapple Hectare)
During the early days of the Capitol's war with the rebels, when money and resources were comparatively tight but new weapons were always needed, it was much easier to blend similar species than completely seperate ones. This could be seen as hampering creativity, but one look at the Night Harpy shows that the designers did just as well within these limitations as outside. Comprised of several species of rainforest bird — namely the harpy eagle, quetzal, hoatzin, and pygmy owl — they are designed from the inside out to attack and kill. The green feathers of quetzals and the brown and grey of eagles and owls provide them with excellent camouflage; like young hoatzins, they have a pair of claws in the bend of each wing; and like any proper raptor, they have nasty claws and a vicious, curved beak. The hoatzin genetics make them somewhat heavy and awkward flyers, however, so they're most dangerous when diving or flying one way; turns and getting back up high are more difficult for them. The name is slightly misleading, as they are really more crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) than nocturnal.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 15 HP. Knife Rolls.
Night Vipers (Throughout)
Initially, this Owl/Viper/Firefly hybrid was developed to help track rebels at night more efficiently than its mutant cousin the Alarm Owl. The Night Viper’s venom is highly visible at night, containing an altered form of the enzyme luciferase, which gives fireflies their trademark glow. This venom is still highly toxic, tagging enemies in order to make them very easily seen at night, though does not kill for several hours, letting tagged rebels lead the Capitol right back to their bases. The issue with these mutts, of course, is that they don’t really distinguish between rebels and the Capitol forces, and will attack anyone indiscriminately.
Poisonous. Not edible. 15 HP. Knife Rolls, Whip Rolls.
Swallowfish (Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
During the dark days, the rebels had a tendency to make their encampments near water. Because of this, Capitol scientists created the Swallowfish, a two-foot-long mutt with the combined genes of a gator and a piranha that had the capacity to swallow practically anything - namely invaluable rebel plans - and return it to Capitol spies waiting nearby. The main problem, though, was that the creatures would not consent to spitting whatever-it-was back out; the rebel plans would remain inside the chamber in the stomach of the Swallowfish unless surgically removed. Nowadays, the Swallowfish can be found in any body of water, large or small. The scaly, four-legged creature enjoys sneaking up on unwary beach-goers and gobbling up their belongings - and maybe their fingers, too, as an added bonus.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 15 HP. Knife Rolls, Thievery Rolls.
Delivery Words (Throughout)
The docile and loyal Delivery Words (commonly called 'Words') are extremely adaptable and capable of crossing lands and bodies of water to deliver mail for the cost of a couple sunflower seeds. Delivery Words usually prefer to fly away from combat. Their meat is highly delicious and packed with essential vitamins. It is not hard to spot a Delivery Word, with their black feathers, gray-specked eyes, and tendency to honk loudly; however, Words can be hard to capture with its ability to withstand high acidity.
Not poisonous. Edible (Small Game). 10 HP. Knife Rolls.
Nibblefish (Braided River, Floodplain Forest)
Inspired by an old amazonian beastie, the nibblefish are quite voracious eaters — their sharp teeth are quite handy at ripping out flesh, and their aim when leaping out of the water is second to none. Unlike the piranhas that inspired them, however, Nibblefish were designed to have a small stomach and a very quick metabolism, giving them an insatiable appetite--so much so they may even turn to cannibalism when the food supply runs short. Despite this, they are a rather plump, if chewy fish, as long as they are caught unaware. Going into hunting mode (which is somehow different than self-defense mode) causes them to release a hormone that floods their cells with a toxin. (Must have completed Trapping station to capture.)
Not poisonous. Edible (Small Game). 10 HP. Knife Rolls
Sabertooth Bats (Cornucopia, Canopy Village, Hungry Jungle, Termite Towers, Aerial Root Bridge)
At first glance, Sabertooth Bats appear to be regular bats. They come in various shades of black, brown, gray, and even reddish-orange, and dwell in similar types of places. If you saw one flying at you, though, the difference between the two species would be immediately apparent: protruding out of the mouths' of these Capitol muttations are two poisonous fangs that grow up to six inches in length. The Capitol combined the genes of large fruit bats, long extinct Sabertooth Tigers, and even a particularly venomous species of viper to create a creature with a wingspan of up to 6 feet with superior night vision, perfect for tracking rebels who may try to run under the cover of night. Their one weakness, though, is that somewhere in the mix they acquired glowing eyes; if you spot a luminous pair of orbs in the darkness, you may just have a chance to escape.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 8 HP. Knife Rolls.
Carrollpillar (Throughout)
This unusual variety of caterpillar, unlike most of its counterparts, spends its entire life slowly smouldering, rather than working towards metamorphosis into a butterfly. The Carrolpillar is a vibrant blue, and its four-inch body houses a variety of chemicals, including several necessary for a combustion reaction that one kamikaze insect uses as a very effective defense mechanism when it feels that the Carrollpillar colony is threatened. Carrollpillars burn up stores of toxins in their bodies, which produce a broad spectrum of unpleasant effects in their victims, spanning from severe hallucinations to seizures or cardiac arrest.
Instead of having a combat attack, Carrolpillars have a non-combat dice roll that is used to determine the effect that they have on their victims.
Poisonous. Not edible. N/A HP. Non-Combat Rolls.
Pathfinder Bugs (Throughout)
Pathfinder Bugs exist in swarms of hundreds. They are no bigger than a speck of dust and in daylight look almost identical to a swarm of gnats. The main difference is the sticky slime covering their entire bodies that gets left behind on anything they touch. The slime isn't toxic, but glows bright violet in the dark. Pathfinder Bugs are very attracted to the smell of sweat and will follow around a large mammal around for days feeding off it. Not only do Pathfinder Bugs cause any human they're attached to to glow brightly in the dark, they also leave traces of their slime behind on anything around them they happen to touch. This creates a clear path to any human target.
Not poisonous. Not edible. N/A HP.MUTT CONTEST WINNERS
Tropius (Throughout)
The latest Capitol Craze is one created solely for historical homage: Tropius is a gentle giant to us- roughly the same height and weight as an elephant- but only because making it as tall as its brontosaurus ancestors seemed a bit like overkill, even for the Capitol. Tropius DNA is an amalgamation of plant, elephant, and, yes, dinosaur genetics wrapped into one. As such, it grows various tropical fruits and plants on its back and neck. They are the perfect babysitters for children: their naturally friendly disposition and ability to take care of snack time all by themselves is making more and more people apply for a license by the day. A simple change or two to their coding could make them violent, stomping those smaller than them, maybe even growing a few poisonous berries instead of bananas or strawberries.

Ludicolo (Throughout)
Standing at 4'11" tall and weighing in at 121 lbs, Ludicolo was meant to be a regular pineapple that was simply genetically engineered to be larger. Instead, it was given life. The Capitol realized their mistake, and were unsure of what to do with these creatures, therefore keeping them in captivity for long periods of time. Keeping them in captivity, however, started to drive the Ludicolo crazy. They make loud screaming noises as they attack anyone who disturbs their peace.
