In the aftermath of the chaos, Silas found solace in the fact that he'd made it out unscathed. Perhaps the others were intimidated by him, by his size, and they didn't want to risk pissing him off. Or, maybe they weren't scared at all and they thought they had bigger fish to fry.

Either way, Silas had survived and didn't even have a mark to prove he'd been there.

He turned to Beck, the only of the familiar faces who he hadn't lost track of during the manic events of earlier.

"Hey Fiend, there's some pretty weird flora around this place, y'know?"

He looked down below him at the disorienting forest, how swirls of mist twisted like branches among the stout trunks that stretched all the way up to where Silas stood and further. He had to crane his neck to see the tops of the trees closest to him, put his stomach into knots and he had to cling to the edge of the rope bridge to keep himself from toppling over the edge.

It soured his stomach and he had to consciously tell himself not to vomit. Not now. Not when it was sure to look like nerves from the bloodbath. Deep breath in, deep breath out.

"We could probably find at least one mind-alterin' substance hangin' around," he carried on.

The tree houses spanned as far as a city block, clusters of relatively well-kept, well-constructed buildings hanging in the air like plump grapes. It was easy for him to imagine people staying in a place like this, a quiet little slice away from the world, away from the predators below, quiet days watching the children play and quiet nights listening to the cicadas sing. If only it hadn't been designed for teenagers to murder each other within.

He smirked.

"But we gotta find Princess and Martyr first. I ain't gettin' caught down there when it gets dark. Fuck that."

Save for the arrow in his chest, things could have gone worse. A volley of footsteps lingered behind him, the melody of fleeing tributes retreating into the shadows to lick their wounds. They weren't his enemies anymore.

If only it would stay that way.

But that was a problem for another day, Beck decided, all that mattered was that he'd survived the Bloodbath and he was in an uncomfortable amount of pain. The cravings made his palms itch. Suffering was meant to be treated with euphoria, it was as if his body couldn't fathom any other solution. Adrenaline was wearing off quickly, a cheap high Beck wouldn't mind chasing some other time. Right now he had to keep running. As weak as he was, he couldn't afford to die here.

The forest's veins were gnarled, twisting and turning in front of him as found himself precariously hoisted just above their depths. "Hey Fiend, there's some pretty weird flora around this place, y'know?" Silas' voice was less of a strain on his frayed nerves than anticipated. A grin snuck onto his lips as he turned toward the familiar voice and, thankfully, away from the dizzying depths.

Silas offered familiarity, something to be other than alone. And he didn't seem the type to try anything, that is to say he wasn't stupid enough to take on the guy carrying the giant axe. It was okay to laugh along with him, that didn't mean they were friends. His arrangement with him and the girls was temporary but at least they all knew the foundation they balanced upon was fragile at best.

He nodded along with Silas, hungry as he scanned the world below. It became a lot less sinister when bathed in the light of Silas' idea. "I'd take just about anything we could find after that disaster." Maybe it was the pain making him so honest or maybe it just felt good to say it. "I know-" Beck suddenly felt out of breath. He could have sworn he'd stopped running. "I know I've seen that shit before. On the television. It's somehow worse. So much worse."

Something sounded from behind him and he turned, hand flying to his bloody axe on instinct.

Something was nothing.

At least nothing he could see.

"Great, I'm already going crazy. Let's find the girls so we can get busy forgetting today ever happened."

Hours passed and if it hadn't been for the fact that he was entirely sober and every inch of his body kept reminding him of it, it would've felt almost natural. The bridges were mostly trustworthy, the tree houses were empty, the bugs were having the time of their lives. And then there was Beck and Silas, two things hopelessly out of place, two things that did not belong, two things that would ultimately pay the price of being there.

Silas couldn't be bothered, picking a mint leaf and plopping it into his mouth.

"Sun's gonna set soon," he voiced, though he had no real way of knowing it. The forest was so insurmountable that it just as well could've been true that it was just hidden behind the gigantic trees that swallowed the arena whole.

Still. Darkness was bad. Darkness was where everything that couldn't happen in the daylight, for fear of being caught, happened. Darkness was when wild animals went hunting and people like Guy Merchoff sent their children to break into people's houses. Darkness was when you realize someone has been following you and you aren't sure how long, or what they want.

Darkness was an old friend of Silas Merchoff, but the benefits were never exactly mutually exclusive. The darkness helped him to do what he was supposed to be doing, also kept his secrets when he went to do whatever else it was he wanted to do. But even in the dark, even when the shadows give way to day and there's no proof that anything was ever there, the truth had a way of wiggling to the surface eventually. A long lost older brother was reaped, a man who supposedly hadn't paid his dues proved that he had, and the hangover pounding through Silas always demanded more to numb the truth.

"If we don't find them soon, we're gonna have to put up camp."

As if to accentuate his point, cicadas and other animals began to chirp within the hour. The forest below and around them felt more alive, wind rushing through the limbs, leaves brushing across the bridges in swept piles that crunched like autumn under his feet.

They'd seen others in the hours of enjoying their vantage point, off in the distance, never the wiser to their presence. But it was only just before total darkness that he pointed out Princess and Martyr trudging along.

He made a shooting motion at them to catch Beck's attention.

"Now, how the hell do we get down?"

He worried his lip between his teeth. It was an old habit and a bad one, but it certainly wasn't the worst. No, Beck Hailsham was made up of horrible habits and broken promises, a remnant of white light torn into all its pretty pieces. Red like blood, blue like home, yellow like the flowers that caught his eyes as he and Silas trudged along the walkways. They were beautiful, but Beck didn't trust beautiful.

Hours had passed, the silence which was once precious as a silver parcel quickly turned rotten. Without daylight finding their allies would prove more than just a challenge, it could be deadly. The sun painted a funeral pyre along the horizon as she sunk below it, signaling the beginning of the end of their first day in the arena. Still, he saw no sign of Sophie, nor could he make out the biting tone he'd come to associate with Juliet.

"There haven't been any canons." It helped to state the obvious. Beck picked at tree bark as they passed, sucking on the end of a larger shard and coughing as a bitter taste overwhelmed him. "Okay, bad idea". He shrugged once before tossing it into the depths below. "But- do you think they're okay? Should we go back? I mean it was crazy-"

Silas stopped him in his tracks, two girls lingered at the end of his pointer finger. Beck felt his knees go weak, squeezing Silas' shoulder in relief as he struggled to wipe a smile from his lips. "Uh, maybe we could find a vine or something? They could come to us." He rubbed the back of his neck and let out a strangled laugh, "I don't really feel like climbing, yknow?"
