You had been so close to getting out. You and Walter were already going, Alfonso close behind, when one of the other girls had struck out with her axe. Alfonso had been weak, from his wounds and the poison— one more hit was all it took. You watched him crumple to the ground, eyes wide, mouth agape.
The other tributes descended into chaos, with weapons and fists drawn against allies. All you could do was grab Walter by the shoulders and pull him away. You limped as fast as you could away from the scene, the pain in your knee still sharp and radiating, but you couldn’t let it stop you. If you stopped, that crazy bitch would probably try to kill you too.
You ran until you reached the edge of the pineapple field, letting go of Walter and collapsing onto your hands and knees. The pain was unbearable now. You tried to rummage through your bag for medical supplies, but every time you moved, it felt agonizing. Tears pricked up in your eyes as you shifted onto your back and tried not to wail out. Even though you didn’t want to, you held your bag out to Walter and shook it, a silent plea for help.
