The familiar squeaks and squawks of the birds outside signaled to Adonis that it was time to wake up. Adonis groaned to himself. Getting up for work everyday wasn't typically something he enjoyed doing. He doubted anyone enjoyed it. Nonetheless he rolled out of bed, gathering his work clothes. A pair of old tattered boots, cargo pants, tucked neatly into the boots, and a black cargo shirt. Walking into the kitchen he was greeted by his father, who scowled at him.
"Late. You are late, Adonis. When will you learn responsibility?"
He didn't feel like he was late. Was he? He had risen just the same time he did every morning, the birds always woke Adonis up. He strolled past his father, mumbling something about it being an accident, and walked out the door. He hadn't had a chance to get anything in his stomach, for fear of actually being late. No sign of his brothers indicated that his father was probably right. His father would be following shortly after. He was an overseer to the work they did, so he never had to be there at the crack of dawn. He had time to think before he went to work, unlike Adonis and his brothers. Upon arriving Adonis started the trek to his normal spot of work, a nice little patch of field. He was stopped by a peacekeeper.
"Adonis King?" The peacekeeper spat at him. Adonis nodded. "You've been reassigned, quadrant 4, lower left corner." and with that the peacekeeper shoved Adonis forward toward quadrant 4.
Fantastic.
Not only was he late, but he was reassigned as well. The overseer of Adonis's quadrant was a nice man, who often let Adonis take his work as easy as he wanted. He knew Adonis was a good worker and always got the job done. There was no telling who he would get now. He was directed to a plot of land that needed picked. All of it needed picked. He immediately took notice of the boy he was next to. He looked extremely familiar. The name came to him when he was working, he was Xokok. He had seen the boy in school, but never really interacted with him. His family appeared very tight knit. He had seen Xokok fight others in his families honor quite a few times before. He could be a friend, ally, partner of some sort. Adonis knew they were both outcasts.
He glanced over at the boy, hard at work, sweat dripping down his forehead.
In a hushed whisper, so that no peacekeeper could hear (they frowned upon workers talking to each other during shifts) Adonis spoke.
"Names Adonis, Adonis King."
