You missed Bill.
He was kind to you, kinder than you ever deserved. He knew that you were useless and broken and he took you in anyway, carrying you on his back and helping you stitch together skin and friendship bracelets. Just like your first allies, like Abs and Alfonso, he had left, his soul departed from this man-made arena. He had been your friend. He had been your last link to home. He had a been a person, with his own life, his own wants and dreams, and he was dead because he'd been trying to protect you.
When the final blow had hit, he'd fallen to his knees, almost like he was praying. You watched him smile at you and felt like you had to be sick, because it was too real. This was all too real. He tumbled into the river and you jolted forward, scared he would wash away before you could say goodbye, but he stayed, stuck like a rock. You ran over and knelt at his side, water rushing over your knees and soaking the fabric of your uniform.
"Sorry I can't be there to see you win," he said, and you started crying, but maybe you were already crying. You reached forward and moved his hair out of his face, because it felt like all you could do. You wished you could tell him that he was your friend, and you were glad he took care of you, but you couldn't. You just waited until he died and then screamed until your throat went raw.
You had to leave, your stomach was in knots and you didn't want to vomit anywhere near his body. It felt cruel. You walked and you walked and you walked until you were back in the place where you'd found Bill. Your knee ached, either in memory or actual pain. You hadn't bothered to stop and check on it. You could barely even force yourself to breathe.
You ducked into one of the empty termite mounds and wept until you passed out. While you slept, it started to rain. It came down in sheets, like it was trying to cleanse the land of all the sins the people on it had committed. It was still pouring when you woke up. The tower you were in provided some respite, but you knew you had to get up and keep moving.
The sand underneath your feet stuck to your boots like gum, caking up the soles and making it even harder to walk, and the rain weighed you down, like you were stuck under a waterfall. Still, you trudged along, walking until the barren terrain of the termite towers turned into a bridge stretched over a long chasm. Below it, even more rushing water. You wondered if it had taken Bill's body with it yet.
As you thought, stuck in your sorrow, you noticed it— her. The girl from One who had been there with the boy who killed Bill. You froze, deer caught in the headlights, before reaching back, slow as a sloth, still staring her dead in the eye. When you felt the cool metal of your sword's hilt you tore it out of your bag and pointed it forward. I know what you did, you thought. I know what you did.
With your arm outstretched like that, you could see your bracelet, fallen halfway down your arm but still tied on tight. You wouldn't forget. This would either end one of two ways. Either you would make it out of this, or you would get to see your friends again. Somehow, living felt like the worse option.
