axe"Georgina Anne Hayward, you get down from that tree this instant—" her mother shrieked, lips tightly pursed and heels clacking on the garden's stone pathway. Georgina looked down on her from the top of the tree, the crisp wind threading through her hair and mischief twinkling in her doe-like eyes.
"But I can reach the stars from up here," she beamed, stretching her tiny hands toward the inky black sky. But the stars do not warm her fingertips when they collide.
She doesn't heed her mother's words, slowly treading across the thickest branch, whose emerald-crusted leaves rustle in the wind. Her mother is illuminated by the soft, amber glow of a paper lantern — Georgina can make out the vacant features of her face, tightly pulled back like the bun atop her head. "If you take one more step, you can kiss your new library goodbye!" her mother says with one hand against her hip.
"Ugh—fine," Georgina sighs, jutting out her bottom lip and indiscreetly huffing, fanning her locks of hair upward before nestling slightly above her eyes. The heels of her shoe make crumbling sounds as they drag against the gnarled, maple bark. The branches caresses her hair with late-budding sprigs, begging her to stay and pour life into their scented tendrils. Georgina lands onto the ground with a huff.
"Young lady, I forbid you from ever doing that again," her mother snaps, kneeling down and clutching Georgina by the shoulders. "—and wipe that dirt off your dress, you're not from Twelve."That promise was broken when water tore through the clouds. Georgina hugged her knees to her chest, carving tiny drawings in the stone with the tip of her spear. She flicks her eyes up toward the sky, noting the darkness that embraces the horizons. The sky was like molten silver, illuminating argent hues and swirling clouds.Rain began to gently trickle from the sky in a melancholic rhythm. The water painted her moonlit skin with thousands of liquid orbs, reflecting the picturesque garden of flowers and overgrowth that grew by the stone-braided river.Georgina, luckily, climbed into a nook of a tree before the gentle droplets turned into barrage of rain that struck the ground. The rain doesn't wash away the tears spilling down her speckled cheeks. The rain doesn't wash away the tears for Willow, or Mia, or Tristitia. The rain doesn't wash away the tears of hope that Bill — or even Eloise are still alive, hearts beating to the chorus of her own. She told herself that she was strong, but the little girl that was stared at by hollow eyes and hollow faces, the little girl that was told she would never amount to anything, always finds a way to shine through.The rain still poured when she woke up, pounding against the tree she hid herself in. Georgina could barely make out any distinctive shapes through the rushing waters, but she did see a quick blur of black through the cloudburst — that was something she was sure about. She pokes her head out of tree nook, hoping that Bill or Eloise's face would materialize through the rain.But she saw the raven-hair and ivory skin. She knew that hair — hell, she lived with him for a week. Laurent Crest. They weren't close, but there was a part of her that was happy to see him, happy that he reminded her of all the things she had waiting for her back in District Three. He reminded her of the sweet honeysuckle her mother grew and the faces of her young cousins, sun-kissed and speckled with stars.When they parted ways at the Capitol, she hoped that the last time she would see him is in the anthem, glowing a vibrant blue against the midnight sky. She hoped that someone else would be the one to kill him.
