The 84th Hunger Games Victor Presentation

The president of Panem stood on the magnificent stage in the City Circle, addressing his people as he had done numerous times before. Another of his prized Hunger Games had come to a close. As usual, they had been an enormous success; enough blood, death, and tragedy to satisfy the viewers, and also to subdue the thoughts of rebellion that the high government official knew were brewing in the minds of some of Panem's citizens.

For the second year in a row, the President of Panem found himself practically jovial as he checked each of his jacket buttons. If the 83rd had been smooth, the 84th had been exquisitely well planned, narratively speaking. The Hailshams from District Four had every reason to rise above their competitors, and rise they did. Which wasn't to say he hadn't been concerned; at the Top 8, he'd sent carefully worded letters to Gamemakers Starfyre, Seuss and King, reminding them of his displeasure if a less worthy tribute won.

In the end, Beck Hailsham made quick work of the young, but startingly courageous, Walter Blake. It was such good news that, for a time, the tremors stilled and color returned to his cheeks. His personal stylist knew better than say such but he knew she used far less rouge than she had even last year.

Now he stood ready to face his citizens. Two great Games, two great Victors, one forged in ice and the other in sticky heat. He finally stopped fiddling with the brass buttons on his jungle green jacket and gave a faint wave to begin the ceremony.

President Snow lifted the curtain, ascended the stage, and quieted the crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm pleased to welcome you to the victor presentation ceremony of the Eighty-Fourth Hunger Games!" As usual, there was the deafening roar of approval that followed. "Tonight we will show a recap video of this year's Games, so be sure to stay tuned!" Like they have a choice, the president thought. The recap video was required viewing for all of Panem.

Snow went on to announce the prep team, stylist, escort, and mentor of the victor; all were received with tremendous applause. But then, the moment they were all waiting for... Snow plastered a smile across his face before speaking once more. "And now, may I present the victor of the 84rd Hunger Games... Beck Hailsham!"
