"If to change is what you need
You can change right next to me
When you're high I'll take the lows"
The kiss lingered on her lips, her final goodbye with Katelyn before she was back on the train and once more headed for her home in District One. It was the first time she’d ever watched the Capitol skyline disappear as the train entered the tunnel thinking that she was actually looking forward to returning next year. The train picked up speed, and soon the flashing lights blurred into one as it sped onwards. It wasn’t a terribly long journey to get back to One, in fact it was probably the shortest train journey that any of them had to take.
She’d waved to Justice, and spoken a few brief words to him as they’d entered the train before they’d gone their separate ways to their carriages. She was sure both Peridot and Topaz never came anymore, and she had yet to properly sit down and talk with the most recent victor of district one, Ridley Le Roux. For a brief moment she felt guilty, she’d dropped the ball on that one for sure.
She remembered exactly how it had felt winning to find her mentors and support network practically non-existent. It was like searching in the dark for the light switch, the pressure of the darkness pressing against you. Slowly watching as you grew more and more frantic trying to find an escape. Thankfully she knew Justice had been there for her, so at least she’d had one face to hopefully guide her in some small way. She would have to fix this, somehow she would fumble her way through making it up to the young victor.
The carriage door slid open with ease and she stepped inside, pushing it closed behind her. She’d seen Ky disappear into the room shortly after the train had allowed them to board. Her curiosity had almost overcome her a number of times over the past days. There was no denying that he had been sneaking out of their apartment and disappearing into the Capitol’s streets at random times throughout the night and day. She had no idea where he had been going, what he had been doing, who in Panem he could have been meeting.
The dining carriage was covered in food, and Opal knew that neither of them would really touch it. She wasn’t the best cook in the world but she much preferred her own meals to the artificial flavours that the Capitol served. The homegrown goodness of her own fruit and veggies would always win. Ky was sitting towards the back of the carriage, and she wondered over, pulling up a seat beside him. “So,” she began, trying to keep her tone as neutral as possible, “please don’t ever try to teach others your sneaking skills.” She grinned, laughing at what she thought was a fabulous joke.
“I know you’ve been sneaking out, where have you been going?” There was nothing accusatory in her tone, she had long since left that behind. She knew that Ky would go and do as he pleased and she would not force him to tell her everything. Pushing him away from her was the last thing she would ever do. Him being safe was all that mattered to her.
