You are a boy who was made to grow up with a clenched fist always and teeth gritted in anger—in rage. It’s in your blood and has been since the moment you took your first breath. A beautiful, blond baby boy. The youngest Hargrove and for many years the softest. You looked at the world with eyes wide and arms open, more love in your heart than your older sister; a young woman with war in her bones and an apathy coated organ lying within her chest.

She taught you how to fight, how to swing your fist with purpose and always strike true. Your older brother was, as your father always so lovingly put it whenever he thought no one of importance could hear him, a right piece of shit. He was boisterous and foolish, always sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong. But he taught you to be curious, to always ask questions even if you’re afraid of the answer. The truth matters more than anything else, no matter how ugly it may be. You carry that lesson with you when you eavesdrop on your father and sister having hushed meetings in his study. It keeps you warm on the brisk winter night when you follow them through the streets of Ten.

The truth matters…

It rings true in your head, those rare few words of wisdom your brother offered, when you report them for aiding and abetting rebel operatives. You watch them in disbelief as they hand over stacks of papers, food and clothes, makeshift armor. Anything and everything they’d need to wage the war that’s been brewing between the Capitol and those unwilling to follow their way of life any longer. They offer up stolen guns and ammunition, hushed advice and even kind words of luck. It churns your stomach, the empathy for the very people who have set off bombs in the streets and executed more Peacekeepers than can be counted—the very people you vowed to join and serve beside for life.

More than anything else…

You keep your head down for the time being. You stay quiet and listen. They don’t trust you, though. While your sister plays both sides, your father uses his connections to feed the rebels any and all resources he can. They spend months doing this, moving in the dead of night, long after your mother and brother are fast asleep, and conduct their new secret lives like expert spies. What they never expected was for you to emerge from behind a truck one night after their exchange and interrupt.

No matter how ugly it may be…

They beg you not for forgiveness, but for absolution. Your sister cares not if you hate her, if the sight of her disgusts you to your very core. She believes vehemently this is the right course of action, her only regret is letting you fall so deep into the arms of the Capitol.

Your father can’t be bothered to even explain himself. “Keep your mouth shut, boy,” he says with a harsh tone and a stern look, but you swear his eyes look panicked—like he saw you for exactly what you are in that moment. “What we’re doing here, for them, is bigger than you, or me, or her. Bigger than any of us and I won't have you fuck it up.”

You almost believe him.

His conviction is there, thick in his throat as he pushes past you without a second thought. It feels like an unadulterated betrayal, like a knife in the back from the man you've admired more than anyone all your life.

Almost.

You turn them both in the next day.

After all you are a boy who was raised with a clenched fist and gritted teeth—but now you're a young man brimming with fury.
