Daisy Holliday Female, Age 18 District 11 |
1. Farmer's Daughter
All my life I've grown up on the farm. The Holliday family has owned a couple of acres of land for generations. After the war it belongs to the Capital now but they let us stay here and work it. Nobody can be as good to this land as Ma and Pa.
I'm the oldest child in my family. I just turned 18 so I'm basically an adult now. I've got five younger siblings; Rosie is 16 and she's the smart one of the bunch, always reading and doing her homework and stuff. She ain't one to care much about the farm life. Caleb is 13 and he's the quiet one. He's loud around the family but you can't get a word out of him if a stranger is nearby. Kit is 9 and a constant ball of energy. Josie is 5 and the loud one. She likes to cry and yell a lot and it can take forever to get her to shut it. Lily is the baby, she's only three and she's the sweetest girl you could ever dream of.
2. Lights On, Nobody's Home
I ain't much of a thinker, me. Never have been. Growing up and going through school my teachers didn't like me much. I think I frustrated them too much because they couldn't get me to do the work well. I didn't care much and neither did my parents, we ain't much for books and all. Pa always told us that there ain't nothing helpful a book can teach you that you can't learn by doing. I agree, all the useful things I've learned came from Ma and Pa. Pa taught me how to work out in the fields and the farm, Ma taught me how to sew and cook and bake. Take that, books!
One time someone told me I was as sharp as a blanket, but I don't get what it means. I earned the nickname Ditzy Daisy in school because I wasn't good at the smart stuff. I don't mind being called that though, there's worse things to be called. Plus it ain't a big word. Sometimes people use words that are real big and I just don't know what they're trying to say. Small words are nice and simple, I don't know why they had to make all these fancy words and make talking harder.
3. Cute as a Button
The only thing I like about school is the boys that are there. A lot of them like me a lot and I can always count on one of them to offer to help me with some of the school work. Ain't they so sweet? I think they think I'm cute. I like how I look; I got the same pretty blonde hair Ma has and the light blue eyes Pa has. Helping Pa with the crops keeps me in good shape and I've got a bunch of freckles all over me from being outside so much. The boys make me feel pretty but to me nobody is prettier than Ma. People say I look a lot like her and it makes me feel all good inside. We're both blonde, we're both tall, and we're both covered in freckles. I wish I had her soft hands though, mine are all rough from the farm work.
I've never really had to worry about getting a boy's attention. Since I was 14 I've had 6 boyfriends. My last boyfriend was Jeb Calloway but we broke up. I've started to notice more boys like to help me with things when I don't have a boyfriend. Funny right? Ma tells me I need to be careful when it comes to boys because they could hurt me. When she told me that at first I thought she was being silly, but when I was 16 I caught my boyfriend at the time, Gabe Killian, making out with Hazel Sloane. It broke my heart, so now I know I gotta be careful with the boys I like.
4. Packing a Punch
I ain't much for fighting but I'll do it. One time a group of bullies were picking on Caleb and I didn't like it so I beat 'em up and they haven't picked on him since. I think people look at me as some dainty girl so it surprises them when I can do stuff like that. Pa taught me to fight when the war was going on in case I needed to defend myself. We never saw much of the war come our way but now I know how to throw a punch. One time I punched Hazel Sloane in the face and broke her nose.
5. Traditional Family Values
If there's one thing I hope I get in life, it's a big family of my own. Find a cute farmer boy, have a simple wedding, settle down on a farm with a whole mess of kids of our own. I've grown up helping Ma and Pa take care of my younger siblings and I love doing it. I think I'd be a good mom myself. Call me old-fashioned but the simple homemaker life is all I'd need to be happy. Now that I'm single though that means I need to find a boy to marry. Right now I've got a crush on Whelan Fray (but don't tell him I said that!). He's a boy in one of my classes and he's a real looker.
6. A Changing World
I ain't much of a fan for this new Hunger Games stuff that started up a few years back. I heard it was supposed to be some kind of punishment or something. One of my teacher's called it something once - proper gander I think it was. I don't think it's that great of a gander if you ask me, it's just a bunch of kids beating each other up and dying and stuff. Whelan Fray is a way more proper gander, I could gander at him all day. We never saw that teacher again, but he wasn't that nice to me so I wasn't too mad about it. One time I dreamt that I was in the Hunger Games and I killed Hazel Sloane, but otherwise I don't think much about them.
