It's been a while since war consumed my father. My life reflects the stories of too many people to spend time counting. People walk into war, not knowing what it'll be like, fighting for a "just cause" and ending up dead.
They're fools. They've been tricked by higher authorities into believing that this is what's best for them, but in reality, they're just pawns. The people running the show don't care about other's lives as long as they can win, just like the rest of humanity. That's why they spend the time tricking someone into believing that fighting on their side will be more helpful than living and becoming your own leader.
I'll never let that happen to me. I'll never let that struggle for life that mom and I had happen again.
Now the capitol has provided what they call penance so that they can keep their fragile power in check by scaring everyone. But what others see as a petty form of revenge, the piece of paper that held my name on it, I see opportunity. The last two "victors" have been blinded by fear from rebellion. No one sees the gift that has been given to us.
Life is just a series of competitions: fighting for survival, fighting for power, fighting to be the best. This just expedites the whole process, doesn't it? This is my opportunity for recognition, to make sure that I don't ever need to be beaten down again by societal misfortunes.
It doesn't matter which dictator you live under, as long as you are in control. And that's what I will be in control of. I haven't seen the other tributes yet, but if past years are any indiction, they will be weak. They will be cowering in corners, waiting for people to kill them. They won't acknowledge what's at stake until absolutely necessary.
I'm not like them. I refuse to be weak, to be tethered to fear and anger. They are simply waiting for their own demise.
I can't let that happen to me. I know what's necessary, what has to be done to survive.
