There is a saying, "Oh, how the mighty have fallen," it reads. Every empire falls eventually. For every king who dies, they'll crown another. It's all related to power, or lack thereof. No one cares that even ants die, their bodies buried in the soil they were born from. Everyman is no one; the spotlight is where all the heat of a thousand eyes rests. Every decision scrutinized, every move studied with scientific precision.
All the greatest historical figures remain so because they, at some point, held power, and then that power was revoked from them in some way.
That is the beginning of this story: obtaining that power. Owning properties from one side of District One to the other, the name Vanburen becoming synonymous with words like success and wealth.
At one point, if only briefly, Vanburen meant power.
And then that power was taken when a man and his wife fought on the right side of a losing war. The man and his wife were killed, their house burned to the ground. Their daughter was killed for sport, and their son was never found. Peter Vanburen was a fearsome thing, a tall tale mothers told to their unruly children to convince them to behave. A monster, they called him, war-torn and seeking vengeance for his lost family.
Peter Vanburen the person had disappeared, and no one was surprised that the legend still remained. What no one would realize for quite some time, much too late for anything to be done about it, is that when the name Pietro Vanburen started appearing from time to time, it was the very same person.
He did his business in shadows and through proxies and representatives, only those within a very tight circle of trust allowed to even meet him. He rebuilt his family's legacy directly under the noses of the Capitol, marrying a beautiful woman, building a family with her.
The things done at night, when the moon was high and the world was claimed by silver and shadow, brought breath into the lungs of a dying breed of man. Vanburen, born again, with only the moon to thank him.
In modern times, there are rumors aplenty, and the Vanburens despise them. They swear loyalty to the Capitol and mean it, unlike the ancestors they do not even realize they are related to. If they, or anyone else, were to discover the truth of their heritage: that this powerful family of Capitol loyalists were born from rebellion, whose blood had once boiled with hatred for those they now bowed to, any number of things could happen. Perhaps they'd lose their status again. Perhaps, if the Capitol caught wind of it and felt particularly adventurous, they'd do what they set out to do almost a century before. And they wouldn't make the same mistakes, that can be assured.C H A R A C T E R S
