"you are weak
but not foolish
you have learned
how to die."
SSlowly comes a rising tide.
Sampson bit their nails, out of habit, on the way to the first district. The one and only, the place of cherubs and lions and- god, what a beautiful motif. There was such a rich beauty to work with. A refreshing baby blue train and they never realized how short the train ride from the capitol was.
Whether it be two hours or two days, Sampson knew they would never be confident going into this. Not like how their mother was; not like Sardonyx is. She's still a woman of ferocity in the field and it's even scarier to try and grow into those shoes. Sampson walked with her to the from the train stop to the rows of the victor village. She would take her own way, and her child would take only themself and their tattered, ruined suitcase.
"Alright, okay," they cleared their throat as they stood on the dim porch. A travel notice to meet with one Ridley Le Roux slipped back into their jacket pocket- change of plans, baby.
They knocked once, after placing the suitcase on the porch pavement.
Dimming sunlight ate away at the stickers on the case, a train in motion and an arrangement of geodes.
Sampson knocked a second time, "oh," they smiled something confident. Truthfully, they hadn't expected Ky to open the door so quickly, the lump in their throat harder to swallow than a few seconds before.
"Ky Earnest-!?"
And they held that capitolite composure as warmly as they could, it's been seven years and so many missed phone calls - Sampson reached out to hug their god-brother. "Holy shit, who did your hair? It looks good, it looks good, haha!" It's strange to see him now, especially when Sampson had grown to forget what the boy truly looked like.
He fell off the capitol's view, and in that he fell out of Sampson's life all the same. Opal and Sardonyx kept up at least, but that's the closest they got and Sampson struggled on how comfortable to be around Ky again. Worth a fuckin' shot, if anything, "one second, I actually-" Sampson held one finger up to Ky as they bent back to their suitcase. The clicks of them unlatching it and shuffling inside feeling more awkward than they pictured this moment back on the train ride.
C'est la vie.
"I brought you aaaa," Sampson showed teeth in their smile as they brought the edible out from its wrapping, "birthday grims-cake!"
Besides, they were too classy to smoke anyways.
"Persimmon flavored, you know."
