- You can only get there as fast as you can. When a ranch hand stumbles into the lean-to of the family home, sweating like it's rained and looking like they've seen a ghost, you know that they truly have. You don't live in Six. You don't live in Two. Sometimes, on days like today, all they have to save their coworker, or friend, or family, is you.
- Because of this, the district's had to become self-sufficient. Farmers and cattle-drivers make their own splints and try not to move the fallen until it's absolutely necessary, but there's still only so much that rubbing alcohol and a tight bandage can do. They're not experts. Neither are you, but at Plan G with no end in sight, sometimes "good enough." is good enough
- You've been watching your parent since you were young, helping em dress wounds and administer medicine when you were old enough to hold a roll of bandages. It started with palliative care: you'd read the patient a story, or distract them with conversation, or squeeze their hand tight when all they could do was yell. But when you turned twelve your parent brought you in as usual, but taught you what ey could. It's helped. Though your grades have suffered and your sleep has eroded, you think that this is better experience than any schooling could've taught you.
- You like to sing. When the moon looms over and the campfire flickers, you'll hum a tune of your own design. It isn't good, but it's yours, and no one can take that away from you. Your friends will pour you a cup of hot coffee, the bitterness keeping you up 'til the sun peeks out of the horizon. On days like these, you'll sleep in; but one day you'll need to take over the night shift: it's practical you argue, when you finally roll out of bed. Smart, even.
- But today you vault over a low-lying fence and sprint, your mousy brown hair coming loose from its bun. There's work to be done. If you have to do it, you'll dive right in.
