There has always been calm to the quiet, a serenity sewn into the silence. Tonight only the soft sounds of chirping crickets rise up from the shadows of nightfall. Out past the wrought-iron gates of the Victors Village, a small swarm of fireflies flutters through the wavering fields of wheat. Such a night is a picture of pristine perfection, peace painted by Ripred onto the canvas of Earth. Yet, why do the Victors of District Eleven always have such an affinity for the dangerous? Kirito asks himself that very question as he pulls on a black coat to blend better into the darkness. Lockdown or not, he is stepping out of his house.
The night air is cool, crisp with a touch of sweetness stemming from the strawberry fields that must be blooming. Kirito's tongue dances at the tantalizing thought of the beautiful berries. As a boy, only on the rarest of occasions could they afford even a single red berry. The burst of bountiful flavor was a once every few years experience. Now though, Kirito tries to get a bucket of the bright red berries every year for his own kids. He tries not to spoil them often, but he still tries to keep sweetness in their lives as much as he can.
Kirito has only been out of his house for a few moments when the sound of a Peacekeeper patrol sends him shooting behind a stalk of flowering vines outside of his house. The patrol passes while the Victor's heart is hammering, but he is resolute in his actions. After seeing Katelyn earlier in the day, Kirito knew he was going to check on Harbinger, Navya, and the kids this evening. He had to make sure everyone was okay despite the nagging feeling of worry that has been building endlessly inside of him.
About six feet from his own house, Kirito catches sight of a shape on the steps of the Rhodes house. The sunken shadow can be no one else other than Harbinger. Even over the years, Kirito's friend has maintained his broad stature. Kirito remembers watching Harbinger in the arena when he was still just a tribute. The boy was a brute, striding with strength in each one of his steps. Yet beneath it all is the biggest heart of hurt Kirito knows. His small shape settles next to Harbinger's broad one and he just sits for a second with his brother in the silence.
"What a mess this all is, huh?"
