You don't have to hide your love away and
I know that I'm gonna make mistakes but
Leaning on somebody isn't easy
I'll do what I can to make you see, ohToo long. It had been too long since she had last seen Katelyn. If you had told her three years ago that she would be in this position, nights filled with dreams of Katelyn, waking moments with idle memories of lingering kisses, held hands and sparkling smiles. Opal would have called you an idiot. Three years ago she had given up on Katelyn, honestly, she had given up on the idea of loving anyone at all. To find Katelyn all these years later, and through dumb luck, for Katelyn to be single and well in love with Opal… it was crazy.
The train ride back to the Capitol had been a distraction, her two new tributes being dragged to their deaths once more. Momentarily, she had been able to pretend that the tightness in her stomach and coiling anxiety was for them, and their impending doom. But as the Capitol drew closer and she had bid her leave, she had found herself glued to her chair, fingers tugging at the base of her shirt to stop herself from gnawing on her nail as she stared at the window. In reality, as cruel as it was, returning to the Capitol was a blessing.
She hated herself for feeling this way, but she couldn’t stop. Being a victor, having tributes, it all meant she could go back, she could hold the woman she loved and she could live her life. Opal deserved it, or was that some way for her to ease the guilt? No, she had sacrificed so much, lost so much to the Capitol’s games. Life went on, and she couldn’t let herself squander the chances she had remaining.
Her train had already come and gone, and she sat on one of the metal benches on the train platform. A knee bounced as she peered into the darkness of the tunnel. Ten other trains had come and gone, she’d seen Mace, he’d given her a cheeky, knowing smile. It had made her stomach curl with anticipation, and she’d met his smile with one of her own, she hadn’t been able to hide the pure joy that stretched from eye to eye. She’d rolled her eyes, throwing him a quick tongue poke, before turning her focus back to the train she was waiting for.
The sound of braking on a train track was all too familiar, and the high pitched ring had Opal leaping to her feet. She was so used to her fake leg now, she’d had lived longer with it then she had with her real one, that she found herself balancing with grace as she leaned over the railing to spot the train lights in the distance. Pulling herself backward, she gripped the metal bar with both hands. Forcing herself not to run over to the main exit, she waited, biting her lip as her fingers tightened on the metal.
There were tributes on that train, terrified children who were here to fight to the death. As much as she loved Katelyn, she had to let Katelyn be the one to decide to make the first move at the station. Opal had no idea what the relationship would be like between the district eleven victor and her new tributes. She could wait, off to the side, ready to feel Katelyn’s arms wrapped around her.
