HELLEMINE CAUCHEMAR
“Mack Daddy!” Helle swagged into the dining car, blonde hair in disarray around her shoulders, weight in her knees, eyes bloodshot and squinted. It hadn’t been more than hour since the Reaping and somehow she’d managed to lose any semblance of coherency. If she had looked confident on the stage, now she just looked a mess.
She lifted her hand to high five Mackenzie, then turned to the other District Seven victor.
“Aaaand!”
She’d fully intended to greet the woman equally, but her brain – her floaty, fine brain – had decided to glitch out. J. She was really, really sure it started with J. But then what? Je? Jo? Ja? Ja sounded right, but also horribly wrong.
Shit, maybe it had been a bad idea to get high.
Nope! No time to tank such a good trip, especially while she was literally on a trip.
She realized she’d been staring out the train’s window. Whoops. “J-Money!” Bingo! She offered the same hand to Jacinta – JACINTA! Oh well, too late now - and then collapsed next to her district partner.
“I’m not even going to pretend like I caught your name. Things happened fast back there, yeah? I’m Helle,” and this time when she offered her hand, it came in peace, an open handshake. While they shook hands, Hellemine squirmed. She canted one hip up, dug deeply into her fraying back pocket, and produced a very smushed joint.
“Ha! They missed it!” Strictly speaking she planned to forget all about the pat-down she’d received inside the Justice Building. But this little glorious gift, this would help. This would make everything right.
And then it vanished right before her eyes.
A magic trick.
“Whoa, dude, did you see that??”
The car door’s closed after the avox, but Helle was too busy blinking at Jamison.
