It has been a long time, and Bette Sublino is lucky that she visits Jade Morin immediately after the reaping. If she had waited until the full list was released, she would have said something she regretted.
Since her resurrection, there have been eight tributes sent out to die. One has returned, and Bette knows that Ridley is coherent enough to give her mentees enough information to survive more than a day in the arena (and her advice will be better than anything Justice--already drunk at 9am--has to say; or Opal--emerging from the shadows after a decade of media silence--wants to say), but Bette has never truly come here because she has some form of invaluable information.
She thinks she is here because she will give Jade the only advice that is needed: that apologies are worthless without follow-through, that the best way through a battle is straight through, that creativity is always rewarded, that death hurts, and that you will care for others more than you want to. The real reason, if she decides to think long enough about it, is more complicated. She sees them off, in a way, a ferrywoman ushering others towards their final destination. It is only fair that they have someone to take them part of the way.
Like with all tributes, the arena has left its mark. When Bette walks into the Morin's room, there is the distinct clack of her wooden cane hitting the floor, and the glow of the lamp shines on the scar that runs from the corner of her eye and along the apples of her cheeks, ending where her mouth creases. And there is the confident posture, and the tone of her voice: not polite, but kind.
She doesn't pretend to know Jade's story: she has been trained to wave at cameras and be proud of her status, but all of these tributes are people. All of them deserve some solace.
"There is never enough time, Jade. And you'll have mentors to guide you. But I wanted to wish you luck. And if you have any questions for a non-Victor, I can answer what I can."
