I don't feel the same lingering dread when I board this train anymore. In fact in some ways, I'm looking forward to returning to the Capitol - I don't think I've ever been able to say that before. There are people there that it would be nice to catch up with: Saffron and Mace, maybe Leon. I'll keep an eye out for Beck too, so I can make sure that he doesn't make the same stupid mistakes I did when I was that green in the Capitol.
What I don't look forward to is mentoring my tributes, not least because they're a pair of volunteers who actively chose this fate for themselves. When kids are reaped, they don't have a choice, and my task is to make sure they have as good a chance as possible of surviving the arena and making it out alive. When someone has a fucking death-wish, like these two, my sympathy and enthusiasm to help is somewhat diminished.
I've done this countless times, and usually I'd walk in and try to comfort them, help settle their nerves, accept the situation they're in. This time? I slump down across a velvet bench and stare at the pair, drinking them in.
Lysander was clearly drunk at the Reaping, high on her own blurred idea of a hail mary. I wonder just how much alcohol is in her system, and if the severity of the situation she's in is starting to sober her up.
Kenji looks more present in the moment. There's a wildness in his eyes and a fire inside of him that is both mad, but also promising. Sometimes you need a little madness in order to survive. Yeah, but not by volunteering yourself into a fucking death-match, Trish. Point.
"Well, on behalf of District Five I'd like to say thank you both for volunteering. You saved two lives today." I slouch backwards as the train rumbles on it's course to the Capitol, "I think you're both fucking mad, but thank you all the same."
I stare for a little while, before I finally cave.
"If you have any questions, we've got about three hours. Don't waste them." I say firmly, because time is the most precious thing this pair have left.
