lorenzo emberstatt !
They tend to talk a lot nowadays. Mostly because it was easier to sleep when somebody watched your back, and it seemed Lorenzo became that for Beck six districts away. His eyes and ears -- fuck if he knew how it started. Truth be told, Lorenzo didn't understand much of why Beck called him to begin with, his personal theory is that it was for Kieran.
He brought this up to his brother too, which wound up awkward, as the conversation began with Kieran asking Enzo why he used up their entire phone dial for the month. Which was really unfortunate, as he had also used most of the hours at their other victor house as well. Kieran looked at his with his eyebrows squinted, Lorenzo scratching behind his ear, "so you mean to tell me, you used all of Mace's hours-'
"Correct."
"and then decided, you know what, Kieran and Paige don't need their's?"
"Correct... but in a shittier way, I think?"
"Enzo, what is going on!""Well,
we ran out of hours, and they don't grow on trees?"
"Lorenzo."
"So I came here!' he looked at Kieran as if there was something he was missing, and there had to have been. It ain't rocket science, brother, Enzo would eventually leave the house before telling Kieran who all those hours were wasted on, but Reggie knew. She's the mayor, she's got those unlimited hours in a way that nobody else - not even Victors - do.
Well, lower district victors. Beck seemed to run out weeks after Lorenzo would, and maybe it was just the shared phone business, but he would have to make his way over to Reggie at the mayor office with Mace's card. It doesn't charge him if it stays under twenty minutes, but at this point, Lorenzo would gladly take another nineteen minutes and fifty eight seconds with the only other idiot in the world who seemed to fucking get it.
And if it hit twenty minutes? C'est la vie, Mace seemed so distracted these days, Lorenzo had to get that social interaction somewhere.
He snuck into the phone booth as he usually did, scanning the card and Reggie turning a blind eye. Something about aunts and moms he just meshed with so much better, Lorenzo didn't understand it but he was grateful for it when he sat that metal phone. He hated it compared to sitting at his own comfort, but-
"AYE, good fuckin' morning, king!" talking with Beck made it worth.
Every single time.
The dial tone rang for a short while, and Lorenzo understood the whole mobility issues that Beck was getting used to. It normally took until the second dial up for Beck to pick up, but he was still surprised that he picked up most of the times. Being bro's long distance was a fuck ton of work, but hell, Beck's the only kid who's the same brand of depressed as him besides Temple.
"I didn't expect you to actually be awake! Our sleep schedules ain't been sync'd up in a while- ah shit, I don't know why my voice cracked like that." It'd been working on dropping for long that he wondered if it ever would.
Honestly, he hated the idea of Beck only perceiving him by his voice; couldn't they just post pone this whole friend thing until Lorenzo caught up? Maybe it was lucky puberty or the capitol coin, but Enzo tried not to measure up the ways he lost compared to Beck. "Not to flex or anything, but I've already got my whole wannabe career routine done and I got a shower in," which was good, most days he skipped the shower. Multiple offenses.
"Pa had me clean out Whicker's barn too, but I did that before showering." He took a beat and leaned his back to the phone booth.
"For, y'know.
Obvious reasons."
