She felt as though she floated down style street, yet another balloon, or burst of confetti, or wayward garland taking flight. She had not slept in days -- perhaps weeks. If anything, that was a blessing. The world seemed a little softer, a little stranger, lacking coherency. The Quell celebration was in full force, from the colorful loss leaders staged outside every shop, to the street vendors, hawking everything from artisanal hot dogs, to organic mini wine boxes.

She was almost tempted to stop, thought she had nothing to offer them in exchange.

Every so often someone stopped and gawked. But soon, they realized their error: they were staring at yet another mirage. Most Capitolites shook this off, unperturbed. The lived the mimicry daily. But now that the Quell had brought some district denizens into their midst, some of the stares went on longer, had more weight.

Some were not friendly at all.

Lacking any fabric to cover her modesty, K.P. settled for the next best thing: she stretched her elongated legs, reaching over four inch heels, and picked up the pace. She had only a few things to gather for Mistress; she need not tarry.

She did not like to be apart from Poria Rain.

She catwalked block after block until, within a few doors of her destination, she found herself blocked by a raucous crowd. They cheered heartily, then screamed, "MORE!"

K.P. leaned into the ridiculously high, sharp heels.

And found, over the Capitolite wigs, none other than Mace Emberstatt making his way slowing down Style Street.

From Mistress' shop, she'd slowly learned about the Victors, and she knew this was extremely unusual. The District Ten Victor, though much beloved, rarely made an appearance in public. Supposedly, he was not articulate, and rather reserved to boot. But here he was, smiling at the crowd, smiling, though it did not touch his cold grey eyes.

She ought to run straight back and tell Mistress.

But she also desperately needed to secure supplies.

Her heart raced ahead of her, beating in her chest, her neck, her cheeks.

K.P. staggered back into an alleyway, heart thundering.

The crowd cheered past, once again lauding the victor for whatever he had bequeathed them. K.P. put her hand over her heart, willing it to soften, willing it to still.

And realized all at once that she was not the only one to have taken refuge.

She came back to her heels, spine straight. Her sheer dress sway around her ankles, black ivy blooming along her hips. K.P. curtised elegantly to the shadow, hoping she had not given offense, for she desperately needed to complete her task and return to the haven Mistress provided.

It’d been some time since she’d talked with Mace, but as always he was dependable, quiet and well, Mace. There weren’t that many words you needed to describe him. They’d caught each other up on their personal lives, discussed the lockdown briefly and then moved on to other things. Which was mainly Katelyn talking about Opal while Mace nodded thoughtfully and worked on the piece of chocolate cake she’d brought him.

Eventually she brought up that she was looking to get a new wardrobe for the duration of the games and Mace had kindly offered to accompany her. It was generally not a good idea for a victor to go to style street alone during the day. Especially during the pre-game hype. Katelyn had been swarmed a time or two back in the day, and she some part of her was worried that she might be again. There’d been a tabloid or two that had already picked up on her burgeoning relationship, plastering a picture of the two of them slow dancing across the cover.

Such was the price of fame.

But Mace was as good a wingman as there ever was, and he’d drawn their attention away from her. It was rare that he left the training center during a games, and thus whenever he did, it sent the citizens into a tizzy. Katelyn pulled her hat down and hurried past the growing crowd, ducking into a nearby alley. With any luck she’d avoid any rag reporters looking for the inside scoop. If she had her directions right, Sampson’s place was only a few more blocks away. A shadow fell across the alley opening and she tensed up, flattening herself against the wall.

However, the stranger, a blonde in an overly revealing outfit didn’t see her. In fact, it looked like she was in a hurry too. It was almost funny. Sort of. They turned around and bowed as if to apologize for the inconvenience, and Katelyn’s heart stopped.

Was she hallucinating?

“Stop.”She said sharply, holding a hand up to get the other woman to stay.

Lord have mercy, had they cloned her?

But no, she wasn’t exactly the same. The eyebrows didn’t have the right arch. She wasn’t the right height; the heels did that for her. The slivers of skin she could see through what passed as clothing were devoid of the names she’d tattooed on herself. The other woman’s neck held no scar from a spear thrust. She was a little younger too. Katelyn’s heart beat a little slower as she tried to rationalize what was in front of her. It was like looking into a funhouse mirror.

“Just— just hold on a moment, I— what? I don’t understand?!” she said in fascinated but growing horror, walking in a small half circle around the other woman. Was this a joke? Some kind of sick joke? She’d heard of insane bodily modifications, Capitolites giving themselves whiskers and horns, dyeing their skin green, splitting their tongues. But this was something else entirely. This was someone who had done their best to surgically transform themselves into—into her. Did she have a stalker she was unaware of? Katelyn’s brain short-circuited.

“Why the fuck do you look like me?” she sputtered, unable to keep her composure.
