I have been sat at Teddy’s phone now for at least fifteen minutes, rehearsing exactly how I plan to start this conversation with Angel. I pretend to guess what his reaction will be but each time I play the scenario, the made-up Angel in my head has a different emotion. Shocked Angel. Angry Angel. Happy Angel. Really, I do not know which one I expect. Fuck, I would be pretty pissed off if I learnt but damn, five years apart. People have their needs!
Georgie is sound asleep in the carry seat besides me, wrapped up in her blanket and away with her dreams. For a moment I just look at her, this conversation will be all about her. She is the reason I am forced to do this. It really has been awhile since I spoke to Angel. The phone has always been there, just there never has been the right time. It has been five years; we must be different people now. I have died once since then, maybe it really is time to cut this short. There must be better people in Seven for him. There must be someone is Six for me.
Fuck, why is this shit so damn complicated?
I place my hand on the handset, not lifting straight away. I called Mackenzie’s phone a few days ago, just to make sure Angel will be on the other end to pick up. He is probably waiting right now, wondering why I am so late. Wondering why it is taking me so long to ring. Ugh, I am so fucking pathetic. This baby has given me a softer heart, Angel made it soft in the first place.
Finally, I begin to hit the numbers, dialling the memorised digits that I rarely ever call. It takes awhile for it to connect. Each second excruciating as the ringing tone blares into my ear. My heart beats with the tone, regret pounding with every beat. When it does connect and I hear the hello on the other side, I am just silent. I am like a frigid little teen with muffled words, not knowing what to say when I finally get a moment alone with my crush.
”Hi Angel, it is nice to hear your voice again.” I say, my voice unknowingly raised as I shout down the phone. Georgie clearly hears me; an earthquake rattled the kid and the cries break out. Damn, not now kid. ”I have got something to tell you and yeah, it is got to do with that baby’s cry in the bakcground…shh Georgie”
