He takes some time to get his bearings. The bag he was sent is just large enough to fit the ornate water jug, with its protruding handle and gold trim. There are a few plants shoved next to it— real, actual plants, not any of the colorful ones that must be synthetic or poisonous or a mix of the two. He recognizes them, they’re like what he would have used back home.
He knows he has to go. It was fine to rest for a moment, but there are voices traveling, and he doesn’t want to be around when they get closer. He tugs the bag over his shoulder and trudges on. It’s easier to breathe now, and his legs don’t hurt so bad. The ground begins to morph into sand, and the wind fades, replaced by the still air of a seaside. He’s never seen the ocean before. He figures the coast of Four looks just like this, but the water isn’t red, or maybe it is. He’s never been there.
He walks up to the edge and lets the water lap at the toes of his boots. It would be so easy, he thinks, to just stay here, to indulge in what he’s never seen before, but he isn’t keen on dying yet, not so soon. Give him a few days, let him live as long as he can.
Ezra doesn’t want to be optimistic, but he can’t stop himself.
There are items scattered around the area, out in the open for anyone to take. He hesitates, fearing another bloodbath, but there’s no countdown, and there doesn’t seem to be anyone else around. He grabs some bandages, and a piece of armor that will only wrap around his left forearm. Something nearby is beaming in the sunlight, catching his eye. He walks closer and sees a weapon. The handle is slightly curved, and the blade is shorter than he expected. Still, it’s a weapon, designed to kill and placed out for them to use on others.
He picks it up and it feels heavy in his hand. He twists it around, watches it glimmer in every color of the rainbow. It’s beautiful. Deadly. It doesn’t feel like something he should be holding, but he has to. If he wants to make it another few days, which he thinks he’d like to, he has to be ready to attack. He doesn’t want to kill anyone, just keep them at bay long enough to run. If that makes him a coward, so be it.
