Young enough to hurt like hell
And old enough to understand
Having lunch with Opal and her son was something she’d been meaning to do for a while. In fact, she was supposed to have several people over for meals during the course of the games, which meant she was going to spending a lot of time in front of the oven. That was fine though; as always cooking and baking helped her to de-stress. She had the food mostly planned out, but she was struggling to decide between giving her friends a little taste of eleven, or a little taste of their homes instead.
The blender on the kitchen counter whirred softly as she finished cleaning up her mess. A pan on the stove sizzled and all of the ingredients were ready. Moments like these were what she lived for during the games. There was a lull in the fighting at least, the tributes still trudging over the landscape as the gamemakers decided whether to send mutts after them or see if a fight broke out between tributes.
She put the unused fruits away, pushing that thought from her mind, and then it was time to assemble the sandwiches. She carefully layered Monterey jack and cheddar cheese with thinly sliced ham and turkey, putting one piece of toasted bread in the middle along with sliced tomatoes and lettuce, spreading mayo and mustard and topping the mound with crispy bacon. All between two more thick slices of toasted bread.
Then she took the fries out of the pan she was frying them in and tested one, finding it with just the right amount of crispiness outside and a good coating of seasoning. Onion, garlic and paprika always worked together wonderfully. She cut the sandwiches in half and topped with a toothpick spearing a single green olive, plating them with the fries and setting a pitcher of ice water in the center of the table, next to bottles of ketchup, ranch, vinegar and barbecue sauce.
Ketchup was the only suitable thing to dip fries in, but she wasn’t going to judge people too harshly if they had other ideas.
She had just poured three glasses of strawberry mango smoothie out of the blender and set them next to the plates when she heard a rap at the door. Hastily untying her apron, she hung it up on the hook before getting the door open.
“Afternoon!” she beamed, feeling her heart soar. Amazing what someone’s presence could do to lift a person’s spirit. She needed this after the stress of dealing with Secretary Monferrat the previous day. Katelyn gave Opal a quick peck on the cheek as they entered, taking her hand for a moment. “Missed you.” She said under her breath. There was still so much for her to learn about Opal, and one of the most important things was standing next to her.
She couldn’t read the look on Ky’s face, but that was to be expected.
“Hello to you too, Ky.”
Katelyn was absolute shit at talking to teenagers unless she was sending them off to the arena.
“So, uh” she said turning around and gesturing to the table.
“Lunch is ready!”
