Valeria Romano, 15, Girl, District 7
Appearance:
She is a short (~4’ 10’’), slim, caramel girl who has long, curly black hair. Try as she might, her messy curls can never be tamed with elastics or ties. She has resorted to using her father’s old bandanas to keep her hair back from her small face. Her dad always kept a few around the house. Mostly everything in her house has a bit of sweat from her father’s work with lumber, and the smell has become a salty perfume forever trenched in her handed-down clothes. Though her family is not necessarily poor, they do have an occasional grumbling stomach before bed.
Her dark brown eyes are wide and curious. She has a knack for getting into sticky situations, but luckily, she can usually slip away before things get rough since she’s so small. She has craft hands, usually busy whittling designs into pencils with her fingernails during school. At home she craves beautiful pieces into her bed frame and into blocks of scrap wood. Her hands are usually scuffed up from all her work, but thankfully she’s developing calluses on her hands.
Her features are very sharp, and though she is considered above average in attractiveness, her height usually doesn’t draw attention her way. Her hair is typically the first thing that people see and the last thing they remember about her. (In the games she wouldn't be strong, but she would be quick and nimble.)
Personality:
Valeria is a creator. She spends a lot of time shaping small figurines from wood and moving her thoughts into her work. The only work she can’t seem to do is her schoolwork. Her father isn’t much help either since he is the sole provider for them, working tirelessly from dawn to dusk. Try as she might, school will never go her way. She usually finds herself in trouble, sticking her nose where it
should be, or braiding the tips of curls to pass the time. Even though she isn’t necessarily introverted, she still winds up alone most days. (In the games, she could easily go unnoticed among the other tributes.)
Whether it be apathy or just feeling tired, she tends to draw away from people. There
will be moments when she feels high energy, and one reminder of her mom will suck the joy straight out of her soul. She is starting to make an effort to be more outgoing, yet there is always a grey cloud hanging in the air. Time may help the clouds to move, but she could really use a gush of wind to blow them away.
She is doing her best to balance her poor grades, her quiet relationship with her dad, and
her new found hope for something to look forward to. She feels in her heart that there must be something in the world that can make her happy again. For now, she simply whittles and waits, listening for the wind to come. (In the games, she could be hopeful if given a reason and could be easily manipulated into doing bad/dangerous things.)
History:
Valeria is an only child to her biological parents, but has a half sibling on her mother’s
side. Her father works cutting down trees and is her main care giver. Her mother is basically dead to her; she harbors an embarrassment and resentment of her mom. This distaste is partially from her mother’s decision to leave her dad and is partially from the curse of untamable hair her mother gave her.
At school she has no major friends, which is in part because she is a bad apple and an even worse student. She has no ill will toward any of her peers, she can fade into the crowd on most days it’s not ungodly humid. There are only two things that she absolutely fears: humidity making her mane puff up and ending up in the games.
