Come to me
In the night hours
I will wait for you
And I can't sleep
'Cause thoughts devour
Thoughts of you consume
She’d sat by Ky’s bed all night, unable and unwilling to sleep. The little television in the corner of his room had played out the fights, replaying the highlights of the day. Meredith Strauss was killed by her district partner after fending off a swarm of man-eating butterflies. It’s kind of poetic, but Opal is too tired to appreciate any of the sentiment built between the two tributes.
The screen flickered, moving onto the fight with Arabella, and Opal watched as Katelyn’s last remaining tribute was cut down by the wealth alliance. She blinked, a hand tightening on Ky’s as her stomach curled, mind already thinking of the words to say to Katelyn. Hopefully, there would be no one else-
Jade Morin fell.
The screen showed the district one tribute being knocked down by the dumb scrawny boy from twelve. The boy she had spoken to, the boy she had taught how to hold a sword. He’d killed her last remaining tribute. She slumped, head pressed against the blanket as she squeezed her eyes together, fighting against the painful prickle behind her eyes.
Hours passed as she stared at the floor between her feet, the echo of birds finally pushing Opal to move. With heavy hands she stood up, eyes focused for a moment longer on Ky’s swollen face. The walk back to the training center was long and daunting and every part of her ached. She hadn’t slept for five days, her body felt like lead and her feet dragged as she made her way to the viewing room.
Falling into the nearest chair she turned her exhausted and haunted gaze onto the nearest computer. The screen for the catacombs was swallowed by darkness, so she waited and she hoped Jade would be okay.
