As sickening as it was, Jamison Wolfram was getting accustomed to the sort of numb gnawing that came in the aftermath of taking a life. Not seeing them in the sky later that night, of course, was helpful, but somewhere deeply within, he knew it wouldn't have mattered either way. The boy from Three could've easily been the one to take the swing at Will before JJ got to him. The boy from Nine, if given a second longer, would've been the end of JJ. Arabella killed Helle, and was trying to kill Terra. He'd made his line in the sand, and there was no questioning where his loyalties should lie. At least not yet.
After he'd robbed Ara of her supplies- including the medicine she'd stolen from Helle- he'd set up his tent, squeezed Terra's shoulder, made eye contact with Perdita, and fallen asleep.
In his dreams, Jamison Wolfram was the boy who would be king. He was the talk of the Capitol, the boy on top, the favorite to win. They liked him so much, in fact, the gamemakers kept a good mile-long radius between him and anyone who might have ever been good enough to kill him. And when the final anthem sounded, they announced that the final combat would take place early that morning, and he was excited. Because he knew that they wanted him to win. Because it was his dream, and that meant he was going to win. The world was his to mold, a puppet master tugging at the strings of his own consciousness. But when he arrived at the final fight, which would take place at the red beach, it was Will and Terra who waited for him.
The last thing he remembered was tears filling his eyes, and when he woke, he brought those tears with him.
The sun was not yet risen, but it was certainly trying its best. He considered falling back asleep for a moment, but decided he'd rather face the hardships of the arena than the hardships of his mind, so he climbed out and sat in the near-darkness for quite some time.
It was only when he noticed the shadows moving again that he thought something might be wrong. There was, unfortunately, a sickening moment when he expected Will to emerge from the petals yet again, but instead there was nothing. The shadow never came into focus to reveal itself as anything else, and he realized it was the shimmering form of something he'd noticed on one of the first days in the arena.
They'd never been this close, or this easy to make out. And they walked directly toward the camp.
"Guys," he said, his voice already full of fear for what came next, "Wake up."
Running would've been hard enough with the shadows and the layer of fog so thick that he tasted it when he breathed. The storm of petals and sticks that kept falling into his face made it all that much worse. He could literally swipe his hand out and feel the air bending around his fingertips, leaving a mist of water on the surface of his palm for flower petals to stick to. After almost losing sight of the girls one too many times, he finally had his fill of it and grabbed Perdita's hand.
"Hold on to Terra. And don't let go."
It wasn't a suggestion, nor a question, nor a hope. It was a demand. He'd never meant something so much in the arena. She's all I have left, the look in his eyes said.
Once they finally broke free of the storm, JJ turned to look at the girls. He still held Perdita's hand as they both struggled to breathe. And then he realized that Terra was not there. His eyes widened with fear for only a moment, and he watched the wall of fog and storm, and waited for her to emerge at any second.
She didn't.
"Where is she?" he said, eyes cutting to Perdita. He'd drawn his line in the sand. There were no questions about where his loyalties should lie.
He growled, swiping his hands through his hair and bending over to keep himself from screaming. He choked on spit and survival, the former getting caught in his throat and the latter making his chest hurt.
The realization that he'd lost the last important thing to him in the arena hit him like a ton of bricks. Helle was gone. Will was gone. Now Terra. And he was left with a girl he'd only agreed to work with out of necessity, and it was her fault Terra was gone. And now he had a decision to make.
"The thing I feared most was dying alone," he said. His voice betrayed how broken he felt.
"I feared being alone, without Helle and Will and Terra, and now you've just — " had a tendency of letting people go, it would seem.
He took a heart-aching moment to unfurl his morning star from his side.
"You'd better pray that I find her in time. Because if I don't, this won't be last time I kill you, Perdita Leto."
