The cold bit into Dominic's skin as he trudged along a path to nowhere. The fog hadn't let up overnight and seemed to even expand in some patches, thoroughly destroying any hope that he'd have of navigating the arena.
He had already been missing Pisces, but the longing only embedded itself deeper within his chest as he began to lose the feeling in his fingers. Just having someone around to joke about the cold weather with him would be enough, but what Dominic missed most was having someone else wrapped around him, the stirring of warm breath against his face. It was when they were laying like this that Dominic tried to make the situation better, forehead pressed against Pisces' so he wouldn't have to look into his eyes and crumble.
"This entire time I've been thinking about how I needed to protect you," he murmured, "but you don't need my protection. You're even braver than I am sometimes."
Pisces wasn't trained, but he could hold his own. He'd crawled back from hell, just as Zenia and Jade had, and he'd made it through arguably the darkest moments of both his lives. For survival purposes, Dominic was really just a stumbling block on Pisces' way home. His boy was brave enough to win.
Brave enough to make eye contact.
"As much as it hurts me to say... you'll be fine without me," Dominic said softly, stroking Pisces' cheek. You don't need me.
A hand found its way to Dominic's face, mirroring his own actions. "I don't want to let you go without me but... I understand we have to. There's no real choice."
Dominic let out a long sigh, one that said I know.
"I just want you to remember one thing, okay?"
He pulled back, eyes meeting Pisces'.
"I love you."
Dominic gave a faint smile, an "I love you too" spilling out nearly automatically before he pressed his lips to Pisces' for probably the last time.
Morning came faster than he would have liked, and soon Dominic was waving Jade and Pisces goodbye as he willed his feet to move, watching his last bit of stability vanish into the mist. The words he didn't stay still hung in the graveyard. You don't need me but I need you.
Dominic wrapped his cloak tighter around himself, bringing the cloth up to his nose and breathing in the mildewy scent. Frankly, he shouldn't have been surprised that he stunk, between all the sweat and dirt and blood that he had encountered in the past week, but his nose still recoiled with disgust. The air glittered around him, and as the soles of his boots scraped against the ground he knew he had found his way back to the field of gems.
It was where Callum had cradled Kestrel as she died.
The reminder made Dominic tense, and his fingers released the cloak to expose him to the piercing air once more. Everywhere was just filled with horrible memories, wasn't it?
Something shifted ahead of him, and he pointed his mace in an accusatory fashion, daring whatever it was to come forward. It could have been another hologram, Dominic realized, but those were becoming a little too threatening for his liking anyway.
"Who's there?" he called.
