NAOMI VALERO
I GET A LITTLE JEALOUS, A LITTLE SELFISH
It's been at least a week since Naomi found herself caught on Cassius Wells. Like a speck of dust she can't blink away, her eyes inevitably drift toward the shadows he likes to bury himself within. Sometimes he's reading, sometimes he's scribbling away; he's always wearing apathy. Even when she's dared to look a few moments too long she hasn't seen more than a soft wrinkle in between where his brows would furrow. And that was only for a fraction of a second.
It's impossible to forget how to smile, right?
The interest had started off innocent enough. She'd heard through the grapevine that Cleo had been harassing Cassius and an ember of curiosity ignited. Why? She couldn't even remember what his voice sounded like, let alone think of any way someone so seemingly dedicated to silence and solitude could set off a bomb that big. Cleo wasn't a woman known for her temperance but it couldn't be nothing.
One week later and Naomi fully believes it was nothing.
Embers ate away at her until a full-fledged forest fire raged beneath her skin. She doesn't understand Cassius and it's bugging her. He's winning a game he doesn't know he's playing and that's not fair at all.
As any reasonable person would, she came up with a solution. One that's kept a smile sewn to her lips all morning, inferno tamed to a pleasant burn as the she watches the day crawl by on a clock face. The last bell marks Phase One. There's a rush of students eager to claim their newfound freedom and Naomi is forced to dart and weave through the crowd until she reaches Cassius' side, close but not too close. The heels of her shoes stutter a frantic beat as she struggles to match his pace. (If only she wasn't waiting on that growth spurt). "Cass-" Right, they probably weren't on nickname terms yet, "ius." She finishes lamely and tries to hide it with a blinding smile. "So here's the deal,"
I need to know if you can smile.
"My uh, dog set my notebook on fire." She rushes her words, stumbling over the less-than thought out details, "I see you writing all the time, I figure you're an expert. So you have to come with me! To the... notebook store!"
Half-baked lies are not so different than the truth. She's scared to approach Cassius without at least something to shield them both from the scrutiny of wandering eyes. It's as selfish as it is selfless.
Or maybe she's overcompensating for old mistakes. Maybe this isn't all to sate her curiosity. Maybe she's a bit worried about the boy who never smiles.
Naomi doesn't linger on those thoughts.
Her fingers hook his sleeve and tug gently, attempting to guide him down a hallway and toward their destination. She hadn't really accounted for a refusal in her scheming, so instead of a 'Plan B', Naomi figures she'll simply give him no time to refuse. "It won't take long. And it'll be fun! I promise!"
