“Not the ones I expected, to be honest,” Nilima says, tapping her pen angrily against her notepad.
Verena, unaccustomed to not getting her way and rattled beneath the cool veneer she’s still stitching together, seethes.
Throughout the evening the wind accelerates, cacophonous and wild, aggressively shaking the limbs of the few trees dotting the Arena. Some even snap off with great thunderous cracks, flinging their tattered remains to the earth. As time passes and the anthem begins to play, you can feel the winds steadily growing.
It’s difficult to hear the song over the air whipping around your ears, but the faces of the dead are clear as ever.William Johnwayne, District Two20 gone, only 4 remain. Just 3 more must die if you ever hope to see your home again.

Congratulations on surviving Day Nine!
The wind keeps raging overnight when you would usually expect it to taper off, as clearly deliberate and unnatural an event as the tumult that wasn’t quite an earthquake earlier this evening. Your last reliable companions, the specters still trailing you, stand unfazed through the wind itself and any detritus it sends through them; you, human and tangible, have a harder time. The wind chill is bitter tonight, and it’s a relief when the sun finally returns to ease the harsh night into a slightly less harsh morning.
Slightly. The first blast, buried underground, perhaps lost even to the nearest listener in the sound of the heavy mausoleum doors closing for the final time, could go unnoticed. The cascade it sets off, however, detonation after detonation at the base of each pillar holding the central chamber of the Catacombs aloft, demands the attention of anyone in the vicinity--and when the Catacombs collapse, the mausoleum that served as Cornucopia caving in on itself as the central chamber falls to rubble, the whole Arena feels the shaking.
Despite the Gamemakers’ annoyance, the ground calms soon enough, the sun is shining, and it’s not freezing… but it’s not exactly comfortable either. The wind still chills you to your bones; the flimsy Capitol uniform lacks thick layers to shelter you from the brisk air. Although the sky is clear, the sun’s rays don’t bring the welcome warmth you ache for, and they won’t, even as morning progresses into day. If you do not make it out of this Arena alive, you will never experience that warmth again.
All the while, wherever your day begins, flocks of birds coalesce around you, following as you travel--Delivery Words of all kinds, jewel-toned Diamondfowl and shadow Condors, flimsy-looking, deadly Orizuru. By turns they circle, come to roost, and rise to circle again, like vultures over a corpse that doesn’t exist yet.
You wonder how long they’ll have to wait.
