Laina Keyford doesn't see who threw the first lump of food at her, but she certainly feels it squelch against the shirt on her back.

"Hey!" she cries, face contorting between an uncomfortable wince and a dark glower as she gazes across the room looking for the culprit. You didn't see who threw the lump of pasta and sauce either, but you laugh along with the crowd. It's funny to see a theatre kid get hazed on the first day of school - even funnier when it's Laina, who somehow tilts between being the most liked and most hated girl in this institution.

You see her shoulders hunch over as her grip against her own lunch tray tightens, blood boiling underneath her sun-kissed summer skin. "Who threw that?!" she bellows, tray shaking in her furious hands.

Everyone stays silent - even you. Until someone else launches a milk carton towards her head, and then a handful of peas soar above her head, and some meathead from the sports programme screams "FOOOOOOD FIIIIIIIGHT!"

You watch as she adapts to the chaos - the fury on her face melting away in a blink of her eyes. Up onto a table she leaps, snatching at food trays to build her own barricaded fort, flinging what was left on the pieces of plastic at anyone and everyone in her way.

Strange, you think, just before mashed potatoes land on your jean-clad leg. It's as if she was prepared for the chaos-

Ah, you realise. This was all a show, concocted by Elaina Keyford and her drama kid cronies.

If all the world's a stage, you suppose you'll have some fun in the spotlight - hurling your plate of pasta towards the next bystander.

Alphabetical order. That's what had been suggested when no one raised their hand to take the first shift in the cafeteria. It was an order that had always been good to him, name starting with a 'Z' and all. But today—"Oh, how about something just a little bit different? You know to start off a brand new year! Exciting, right?"—was not that day.

How exactly is flipping a clipboard upsidedown even exciting? How? Someone fucking explain that.

He let himself fume as he slopped food haphazardly onto trays, dying inside with every bland scoop. His hair net was driving him crazy, his gloves kept tearing, and if he had to answer the, "What's that?" question one more time he was going to drown their idiotic heads in the mashed potatoes.

But someone beat him to it. A moment of silence had exploded into complete chaos in all of two seconds. Kids jumped onto to tables, food soared through the air. He blinked a few times as the kids in line either scattered, screamed, cowered, or searched for ammunition.

He looked at the dumbfounded person in front of him with a sigh, raising his voice so he could be heard above the din.

"Peas or corn?"

Another tray got shoved in his face.

"BOTH!"

He nodded and scooped the two piles onto the tray as a few peas bounced off his face and down the front of his shirt.

Okay.

Right.

Exciting.

When the first piece of food had flown towards Elaina, Cleo had smirked, pleased to see that she wasn;t the only one tired of the other girl’s antics. When it had turned into a whole production with Elaina shrieking happily in the center, she had been less than enthused.

Cleo pinched the bridge of her nose because she could feel a headache coming on. There was a certain standard to be kept at Salvatore Academy and this was not it. They were the next generation of district six’s elite for God’s sake! Political maneuvers, affairs and intrigue were in, middle school tier bullshit like food fights were definitely out. Stella was sure that Elaina was a good addition to their circle? Really?

The drama kid was on thin ice with her as it was.

A glop of mashed potatoes splashed onto Cleo’s table, and she set down her fork with a grimace, noting the splash of gravy on her sleeve. Disgusting. Almost as bad as the supposed fettucine alfredo on her own plate. Worse still, people seemed happy to be joining in. She grabbed an unopened water bottle and stood up from her seat, jumping and slapping the bottle open-palmed like a volleyball towards the back of Elaina’s head.

With any luck it would connect.

If she missed, she was prepared to walk over there and dump the entire contents of her tray down the other girl’s back.

The popular kids were the ones that determined the social climate of Salvatore Academy.

Had she missed the memo where Elaina was one of them?

It's chaos. All of it.

She keeps her hand pressed against her chest in shock, gasping with each new cannonball of slop that flies overhead. This isn't something that she knows how to calculate; it's not an argument that she can combat with logic and reason. It's total warfare.

And all she can see around her are the causalities; every ugly shirt with outdated fabric covered in tomato sauce. It's really not that tragic, but then she sees Laina dripping with filth, and it's enough to pull at her heartstrings.

But that doesn't stop the actress from stepping up on her table like some sort of animal. And when she joins the childish fight, Stella frowns in disappointment. She had high hopes for this girl, but now all she can see are pasta stains and ruined chiffon.

Then something slimy launches into the popular territory, and Stella lifts her textbooks just in time to dodge the splash of food. "Have they gone mad?!" she shrieks as calmly as she can, peering out from behind her shield to look at Cleo.

When she notices the athlete's stained sleeve, Stella is absolutely furious. "They think this is funny?" she almost gasps, grabbing some napkins and trying to help her not-friend as Cleo reaches for a water bottle. Rubbing the stain only seems to make it worse.

Pity.

Not that her bestie-enemy can even tell, not as she spikes the bottle at the back of Laina's head with all of her might. "Don't give her a concussion," Stella scolds in a hiss under her breath. "Bodily harm will get you disqualified from the running for junior prom queen."

But then she smirks, clearing her throat and rising to her feet just in time to point at the plastic colliding with Laina's head. "I saw Parker throw that! Can we please have an official in here to deal with this? Someone is going to get hurt!"

She'll see to that.

She always does.

Normally, Parker doesn't stick around for lunch in the cafeteria.

There was no point in sliding along the rows of students collecting slop for lunch, laughing and talking about anything and everything. Cleo and Stella were there always, which made her instantly hate the cafeteria, but today was different. Part of her knew that she was meant to get images of every single moment of the first day, remembering her teacher's words of how this would bring nostalgia to them years later, but she didn't believe that. Nostalgia was meant for good memories and the sooner Parker Gautier got out of this obnoxious game of popularity and fakeness, the better she would feel about everything. It's when she takes a snapshot of Elaina, where all hell breaks loose with the smear of mashed potatoes and a battlecry of food fight echoing the enter cafeteria.

Hell comes in the form of tomato sauce flying across the room. The taste of nicotine on her breath isn't enough to calm her annoyance down. Chocolate milk in hand as she lets go of her camera, watching the scene unfold before her. Cleo spikes a bottle down onto Elaina's head and she can already hear Stella make a comment to her friend. Annoyance fills her head as she approaches quietly, only a table's walk away until Stella speaks up in a tone that sounds like nails on a fucking chalkboard.

"I saw Parker throw that! Can we please have an official in here to deal with this? Someone is going to get hurt!"

Oh, this meant war.

Angrily,she walks over, stands close to Stella, without caring if they had seen her coming. Camera and chocolate milk in hand, Parker knew she shouldn't. The camera could easily get harmed in all of this chaos, but Stella had started it. She wasn't going to let them walk all over her like Cassius Wells, not anymore. Smiling at the two other girls as she lets the words fall from her lips.

"Yeah, someone is going to get hurt."

Quietly, she tilts the open chocolate milk over Stella's head, ignoring everything around her. After it's empty, she steps back, ignoring the royalty of the school, biting her lips on the secrets she carries with her. Eyes glancing to Cleo and ignoring the way her heart beats in her chest with both fear and anger. Stella deserved to be put in her place just as much as Cleo did, but Parker knew this wouldn't be over.

"Have a nice day, Provence and Burns."

Except, tomato sauce splatters against her neck and ears, shifting her arms to block it.

So much for a nice day.

Parker Gautier hates the first day of class.
