S T E L L A She waits until the school day has ended to begin her search for Presley Douglas. Yes, the nobody with low energy levels that she couldn't tell you two facts about. That Presley Douglas. Still, he's easy enough to be around. Clever eyes, closed mouth. A quiet little shadow. The best kind. There's always a look of sadness in the kid's eyes, so she goes through her memories and picks the most melodramatic spot on campus. The perfect place for brooding. Imagine her surprise (spoiler: she's not) when she reaches the lakefront and finds him standing there. "Hey, Presley!" She breaks the silence with her cheery voice, waving at him enthusiastically. "I thought I'd find you here. I brought cookies." She eagerly offers the bag of Zeke's leftover desserts to him. "They're still warm. Promise." Clearing her throat, she takes a step back. "Let's not waste time, though. I'm sure you're so busy with your music lessons." The laugh that follows is, what she assumes, the perfect length and volume. "Speaking of, that's why I'm here. Your musical talent." She glances down at the cookies in his hands, then looks back up with puppy dog eyes and pouted lips. "Would you please be willing to help me practice for my audition? For the spring recital later this year?" Another laugh, but this one strains a bit. "I'm still guaranteed for the lead, but you can never be too cocky." Her smile is sugary and sharp, a razor hiding in a bag of treats. "And the way you play the cello is all anyone can talk about. Well, the people that attend your shows." A giggle, then a gasp. "Not to imply that people don't come to watch you! I just know the dance performances usually draw in a bigger crowd. Which totally isn't fair." She turns on the charm once more, not coming up with a single reason in her mind about why he would want to refuse. "Seems like an even trade, yeah?" The spider catches a fly in her web. She tells it to play her a song. "You provide the melody, and I'll provide the spotlight." |
