marissa ;
Noah, bless her broken heart, wouldn't come out from underneath the shop desk.
Marissa understood her eldest daughter - perhaps more than she had ever hoped she could - in this time of grief. But what it had cost them to bond was a penance Marissa wishes she never had to pay. Noah, sweet and careful and adoring, hadn't said a word since Juliet died. Marissa wished enviously that she too could simply go about life hiding from the world. In her bedroom. In her closet. Underneath the dining room table. Tucked away below the shopfront desk. Without Juliet, Noah was lost. Marissa was, too.
"Come on, Noah," she hummed quietly, peering down below the desk in an attempt to coax her child out. "We can make banana cake in the kitchen, just the two of us. Your favourite."
Noah simply shook her head violently, contracting further into the prison of arms she had given herself that wrapped around her knees and tucked up into her chest.
This child had always been the one that tested both Marissa's patience and morals. Noah could not help the way she was and she knew that, more than anyone. It was not her fault that her eldest daughter experienced life differently from the rest of her children. It was not her fault that Juliet loved her sister as much as Marissa did. It was not Noah that had cut her into pieces and plunged a spear into her stomach and sent her back home in a coffin. But in times like this, when she wrung her wiry hands through her hair and gritted her teeth to stop herself from screaming, part of her so desperately wanted to blame anyone but herself for all the bad things in the world.
Instead of wringing Noah's throat, of causing a scene, of dragging the girl out with her bare hands, Marissa simply sighed and called for "Sidonie!"
The two had shared in their mourning of Juliet. Sidonie, her youngest. Sidonie, her most devote. Sidonie, the spitting image of herself. Sidonie, all the hope of letting this operation continue. Sidonie, the only one left who could perhaps coax Noah from out under the desk in the way Juliet had before.
