You were trained to hate the wrong evil.

Needless violence was a concept hammered into your brain by a Capitol-sympathizing mother. Everything changed for the worse when your father died in the war, and in her spitfire rages she blamed the rebels again and again. An unnecessary war, she said. All of that death for nothing, she scoffed. You remember standing over burning bodies when it was all over, as it was your mother's job to dispose of them. The stench of burning flesh still haunts you in your bed.

She insisted that you were her special little girl and a bright future for the Capitol. You later realized you are neither of those things. The critical stares from others made your spine shiver, and you refused to sit back and let the community bully you without question. They accused your mother of supporting oppressors, and shamed you for following her blindly. They called her a murderer. What did it all mean?

You didn't know what to believe. Your mother is your own blood, but your friends spoke of a larger evil that you hadn't comprehended yet. A silly, confused teenager you were. You tried to love and appease your mother for as long as you could. You saw skeletons and children burning, and wondered how somebody could perform such gruesome acts.

In the end, you didn't let the blood of family cloud your judgment. The true evils of the world became obvious as children were plucked from your district and murdered for entertainment. You knew what to do then.

And when your name was called, it felt as if the evil had sensed your betrayal.
