The sword is much different from what he's used to. Heavy silver, with bladed sides, instead of the pointed end of a rapier he was more attuned to in his days of childhood, practicing with one of the finest trainers in all of District One. Wealth dripping from his fingertips, money spent towards new weapons in Divergent Academy, that surely came from his own father's pockets. A chill drops down his spine, knowing that this tournament would be a great chance to get his name out there and away from his father's money. Born to greed, Parrish Vanderbilt needed to make his own way.

His father couldn't buy him his way through everything.

Divergent Academy was better than that. But his father certainly would try, especially if Parrsh couldn't reach the potential everyone thought he had. Eyes glance around the room, taking his place among the edge of his fight. Serenity Reid was the worst luck for him to get. Not knowing much about others, he was in a predicament, but Serenity Reid made herself known. A certain air around her as if everyone else was beneath her and he's heard how she passed the Dauntless test, a rare feat for only so few.

He couldn't back down now, not when his own destiny stood in front of him. Serenity Reid be damned, he would prove himself. Prove that Parrish Vanderbilt could thrive on his own without his father's cash filled pockets and nefarious ways. The Vanderbilts were one of the richest families, but Parrish had the unknown potential here. Gifted in career training as a young boy, swinging rapiers around with grace and poise, so when he pushes forward with the words upon his tongue, no one but himself is surprised.

"Pleasure to officially meet you, Serenity."

Swinging silver through the air, putting the weight from his shoulder into it.

"Unfortunately, you're in my way."

A tournament. Should be easy.

A smirk spreads across her face slowly drifting from ear to ear. This is one of those moments she’s been waiting for. A chance to simply prove that she is the best to have entered the divergent academy. Nobody can ever come close to toppling her, and now she has a chance to prove it. Every day Serenity puts forth her best effort, and sometimes that means showing off to those willing to watch, and today it's no different.

Not once did she imagine where her life would be, and yet she always finds ways to prove to herself that she is the best. Nothing ever goes wrong, and all the other students in this academy have nothing on her.

Looking at her first opponent, she takes a step back taking him in. Truthfully, she doesn’t know much about him, but that’s okay since she didn't come to this place to make friends and learn about people. She came to wear a crown of gold that someday someone will place upon her head, and this is the first step in the right direction.

"Enough with the formalities." She barks as he speaks, and maybe that’s her first mistake because the blade drives into her foot. Serenity is standing in his way, but she plans on making sure he doesn't make it any further than this.

"Don’t you know it’s rude to hit a lady first?" A sly grin spreads from ear to ear. “But that’s okay because I’m sure you’ll never make that mistake again.” And she lifts her own sword into the air making sure the weight fits nicely in the palm of her hand. Patience is a virtue, and it's a shame she doesn't have any.

"Enough with the formalities."

Rude is the first word that comes across his mind, but he sinks the thought down with the sword to her foot, ignoring the annoyance bleeding off of his shoulders. Parrish was polite, proper, and knew what happened when people stepped out of line, but Serenity Reid was a whole different person. She seemed much more inclined to look at him as if he were nothing more than the dirt beneath her shoe, but he wasn't. "Don’t you know it’s rude to hit a lady first?" He wants to talk back. He wants to tell her it was rude to ignore formalities, but he wasn't his father. Formalities wouldn't belong in the arena or in the training center, he's already learned that about commoners. They prefer to create an informal area and he was not used to it like the rest of them.

"But that’s okay because I’m sure you’ll never make that mistake again."

The sword strikes him in the back as he feels pain, but a smile bleeds onto his lips. This is what he had wanted. A fight worthy of proving himself to Divergent Academy. Who else would be a better one to take down than the one and only Serenity Reid. Fingers grasping to his sword as he steps back, pushing himself into a defensive stance before the words leave his lips. The air feels tense already as he can feel the blood pumping in his skin. He's not broken a sweat yet, but he's sure he will eventually if the fight is going to be like this.

"Ah, aren't you just lovely? Doesn't matter if you're a lady in the games, they'll still attack you all the same."

Stepping back, he pushes forward with a brilliance, remembering the way his trainers used to scold him for putting a single step out of line, but he's mastered these steps. Almost like a dance where blades can hit and strike. His trainers used to make him practice this swing a hundred times before he could go to bed. It's a sharp angle, quick enough to be a sneaky strike, but that's his sword style. He doesn't like direct attacks, he likes the attacks that throw people off balance.

"Too bad for you. I don't make mistakes."

Shoving the sword forward, he strikes with steel.

Seeing him smile as the sword drives into his back makes her wonder what is wrong with him, but Serenity knows that pain is temporary, but pride lasts forever. She takes a step back grasping the sword tighter waiting to see what he has plans on doing next, and right now all that matters is making sure the victory belongs to her. Starting from behind is always a challenge, and right now it's one she accepts. Her face is clear of emotions as he speaks because what he says is true. It doesn’t matter male or female, people will do whatever they can in order to win, however, this isn't the games. This isn’t about winning or dying. It's about figuring out who is truly the best of the best, and the easy answer is her. Of course, he’s full of himself though because everyone makes mistakes. Even him, and right now all she cares about is proving that she is perfect beyond any doubt.

"You say you don’t make mistakes, but you’ve made a mistake in attacking me." Her face is still clear of emotion as the blades strikes the side of her face. This foolish boy tried taking off her head in a friendly fight.

How dare he.

She takes a step back trying to figure out what to do, and the blood gushing down the side of her face. Yet she doesn’t stop. She takes a step back, grasping the sword tighter in the palm of her hand. Each motion is important. Each step of the way, Serenity knows what has to be done, and now is the time to prove that she is indeed the best of the best.

"I don't make mistakes either." She takes a step back this time gripping the sword tighter, and then she swings with all her might. Regardless of what she does, Serenity knows that everything happens for a reason, and the fates have already decided, but it's up to her to make the ending different. And when she’s ready she swings with all her might.

The strike is true.

An arc that even his father would have been proud of. Serenity was a strong opponent, but Parrish Vanderbilt had been working harder than ever to live past the cash beneath his feet. Fingertips tightening around the hilt of his sword, remembering his childhood swordsman teacher striking him in the chest over and over until he got the arc right in his sword. Swiping in the perfect motion to catch an opponent off guard and he had pulled it off once more. Serenity had said he made the mistake of attacking her, but he didn't think that was a mistake. No, he's been fighting with his name on the line. The mistake in this moment was Serenity underestimating his skills. Being trained to be a career at a young age is what gave him an edge over others. Serenity was just another commoner in his eyes, less fortunate than him.

Unfortunately, money did give an upperhand to him.

Her face remains blank; there's no anger behind it. Parrish wanted to see it. He wanted Serenity Reid to be angry with him for being better than her, but she doesn't give in to him. Instead, she steps back and he's left to want more from this bout of swords and tournaments. Quickly, he watches her strike forward, words upon her lips. "I don't make mistakes either." Except, he knew she did. The way the sword goes, he knows he can deflect the momentum somewhere else. It'd still get him a bit, but it'd be enough to counterstrike. Silently, he swishes his sword forward to push the momentum away. The blade cuts through his arm, but he knows it's enough of an opening for him.

"You've already made the mistake."

A smile on his lips as he pushes forward with his sword, striking at one of the strongest competitors in Divergent Academy.

"I win. You've lost."
