As a florist in District Five, most of my business comes around the time of the Games. People buy flowers to put on the graves of the year's fallen tributes, or to bring to the graves of tributes past. It's a rather consistent business, with the amount of death that occurs in the District. People die every day, sure. Here, however, it seems like it's still more than it should be.
From the Games and unsafe working conditions to pollution, starvation and illness, there are many different things that will cause death in this District, and therefore, the grief and mourning of its people. It's much more frequent that I sell flowers for funerals or gravesites than for anything happy like a wedding or a birthday. I hardly ever see a happy face on a person who makes their way into my shop. There are some days where I wish I could change that, but unfortunately, I can't really control what brings me business when it comes to my profession, and I'll take the business I can get.
When Lady Sinclair hired me to work at her shop, I expected that I would be assisting her, rather than doing all of the work myself. I soon learned, after my training as to what to do in the shop was over, that this was not the case. I pretty much run the place on my own while Lady Sinclair does the maintenance and upkeep of the shop. It's not something that bothers me, though. I actually quite like working on my own. It's almost as if I own the place (but not quite).
On a few occasions, I've had customers get frustrated with me and ask to speak to whomever is in charge. Luckily, since Lady Sinclair has told me that I run the shop, even though I'm not the owner, I'm technically 'in charge' when customers ask for the person who is. People often don't believe me way I tell them I'm the one they need to talk to, as I'm only eighteen years old, but when they realize that I'm the only option, they either carry out their complaints (or business) with me, or leave the shop. Lady Sinclair may be the property manager, but it's basically my shop.
I'm not just a florist, of course. I have a life at home, and a family. My parents are both gone now, so my siblings and I live with my Uncle Hugo, Auntie Raine and our cousins. I'm the eldest kid in my family at eighteen years old, and my brother Willoughby is the youngest at eleven years old. We all get along quite well, at least for the most part. Of course, doesn't everyone argue with their family from time to time?
When I'm not at work, I spend a lot of time with my sister, India. We're very close with one another and always have been. I'm very protective of her, and would do anything in my power to keep her safe. Then again, I'd do that for any of my family members, as I care greatly for all of them. I just wish that I could have prevented what happened to my parents, but there was nothing I could do.
If I'm not at work and I'm not with my family, I like to hang out with friends. I might not seem it if you don't know me well, but I love a good party. My friends and I often throw parties and hang out for hours on end, just enjoying ourselves as much as we can. After every reaping, we also like to celebrate with a party if all of us made it out safely without being chosen, which, so far, none of us have been reaped. Luckily, most of us only have one year left, too.
I'd also consider myself to be quite the romantic. I love to flirt, and I love complimenting others to make them feel good about themselves. I also, however, am quite the competitive type. When it comes to my business as a florist, I'm determined to be the best and only place that people go to for their floral needs. I'm also competitive in school, always trying to get a better grade than the rest of the class. I'm not one to turn down healthy competition. The Games, however, are a completely different story.
