I tell myself that I don't remember them, as forgotten as the tales I'd whisper when I first came here as a kid, pressing my face against the blankets so I couldn't feel the tears against my cheeks.

The child of a man with too many plans and a wife with too much fear. A shady deal made in the dead of the night makes for an enemy in the daylight, and an enemy in the daylight makes for a target in the evening. Two bullet holes in the center of their foreheads and a plague nearly dies.

He found me shortly after that, trying to hide myself in the shadows of the orphanage.

He wore white, and I remember how clean it was against the torn wallpaper that spoke of nothing but sadness. When I took his hand I took the sickness that came with it, gave him the sickness that so burdened me. It was never meant to be a fair trade.

There were others like me, weary and bruised and plucked from the same empty orphanages that I came from, the same sickness that was laced within my bones showing in their eyes. Training to be more, to become more. Our life, the Games, the Peacekeeper academy. Anything more than what we would have been.

He was a former star Peacekeeper, retired to the forests of Seven and sworn to raise the blood of the District into fine 'keepers in white, that's what I learned from years of calloused hands and broken bones and the thud of knives hitting their target.

But I see it, more and more with every passing day, that same sickness that I was born from spreading itself thin against the hearts of every kid who comes here, in my own eyes whenever I look into the mirror.

My family was a sickness, my family is a sickness.
