opal earnest.
Another year and two more kids were being sent to their deaths. Her hopes were low. After Jade Morin dying in second place and losing to a drunk from district five, she had no expectations. Thankfully, she could breathe a sigh of relief, Ky finally safe from the reaping pool. The stress of worrying about his name being called could fade into the distance. The nightmares could leave her be.
Well, she still had to worry about Olivia killing him in the Capitol.
The train was as quiet and promising of death as usual. Opal made her way to the carriage where she knew the kids would be, pulling open the door with her lightly bandaged hand before settling down at the large mahogany table.
She looked at them, eyebrow raised as her gaze floated over the girl- Vallora. She looked strong and prepared, a little more serious than Alistair. It reminded her of the last games, where Jade was stoic and prepared. Emmett had been a mess of nerves and uncertainty, having volunteered before realising the consequences of his choice. She wondered how long it’d take Alistair to break. The minds of those who volunteered tended to be a little more fragile than those who were reaped.
“So how long is it going to take you to regret your choice?” She asked him, pouring herself a glass of whiskey. She took a sip hoping that she’d be able to drink enough to stop her depression from rupturing her soul tonight. The ache in her hand was a constant reminder that her nightmares were far more terrifying than the reality in front of her.
Opal turned to Vallora, the faintest of smiles on her face as she nodded at the girl. “I’ve seen you train, Vallora, you’re skilled and strong.” You’ll still die. They all died. She couldn’t stop it no matter how hard she tried.
She pushed the whiskey bottle down the table and towards the girl. “May as well enjoy yourself before you start killing each other.”
