Historically, the gardens on the top level of the training center had been designed for an orientation of tributes prior to the start of the games. Delroy had read about the explanation in one of the histories of the training center, and while he didn’t know how reputable the source was, he could understand why they might’ve chosen the space. At the end of an afternoon while the sun was still overhead, this was a contained spot of green among the acres of a gray and black city.
Maybe the others would’ve been astounded by the sight of concrete and jungle of buildings across the horizon. Delroy felt his stomach twist at all of it. Part of it from how many people must’ve been out there, tidy in their homes, blissfully unaware of his existence. Then, the fact that he existed at all, here, on top of this roof, and not one of them likely cared he was about to be put to death. That they had their cars, their holograms, their everything, and he was the sacrifice that made all of it worth it. That his brothers and family were starving back home so that the capitolites could live in an excess of riches.
He cooled off by stripping out of his trainers and walking across the tiles meandering through the garden and onto the leafy green grass. It was springy underneath his feet, and he could at least feel a part of home – walking barefoot, through something that resembled the hills of eleven than the cold concrete of the city.
Delroy settled on the fountain toward the eastern corner of the garden. Green copper fish coiled together, each of the three fish spitting out water to the basin below. He hung his feet down off the side, careful not to get wet. He pulled one of his knees toward his chest and turned to look out at the flowers blooming in the garden. A few red rose bushes at his side, and a whole row of tulips not far off – yellow, red, and white.
He was taking in the breeze when he saw the girl from two approach, though he was careful not to move.
“Get lost from the training floor down below, or do careers actually take breaks too?” It was more of a dig – Shy he trusted, but her? He wasn’t sure what his district partner saw in her, yet. Better to get a closer look. "Why don't you come and have a seat? I don't bite."
