"You're serious, right?" The woman with flaming red hair, points to several small clear boxes on the table. Several other containers that were a little less, lively, of course. Then something that looked as sweet as the cobbler from this morning. It made me realize that the food I consumed at breakfast was hardly holding now that I had completed a few of the weapons stations trying to find my talent. It's not that I couldn't learn how to throw an axe or maybe even spar with another, but it was just not my forte. I wasn't meant for physical labor as many are in my district who lug around coal like its nothing or push heavy mine carts up and down the shafts. I didn't fancy getting my fingers wet doing laundry at the shop either.
But this -
Perhaps, they thought this a joke at first wanting me to touch what might be seen in the arena but I eagerly examine the antenna of this insect. Then the head and thorax. I can't believe they expect someone to be able to accept the challenge, though I've eaten questionable things before when I was hungry, when I was smaller. My friend Josiah has guided me on plenty of the delicacies of the unorthodox treats.
This trainer doesn't even expect me to touch let alone even contemplate eating something like this. "So, you want me to eat a cricket..." I find it hard not to chuckle at this idea because I have already delved into this sort of taste, not of my own choosing but because life in twelve is not a picnic. "It's not ideal, no. Are you supposed to eat it raw... or what?" I pick at her.
I watch this woman, whose fake freckles dance on her nose as she pretends to pick it up and demonstrate how to consume it and I bite back the need to grin. What would she begin to think if I did this without flinching. How many others have she tried to get do this challenge and watched them walk away, green in the face. I wonder if I could find another to face this challenge with me. I take a gander around real quick and spot another walking dangerously close to this station.
"Hey - challenge me." I fluff around my hair, putting off the image of my insecurities and gesture to the clear containers holding different types of insects and other questionable plants.
