“We could've taken them.”
I cross my arms and walk a few paces behind the boys, looking over my shoulder every few minutes to where I imagine all that loot is being doled out. The way my pack thuds against my back is just sad, pitifully empty except for the pair of socks I managed to grab. Socks! Man, we don’t even have weapons, but yeah, sure, I’ll beat someone up with a fluffy sock instead, that’ll work.
Idiots.
Like, I literally got punched in the face back there? And Anari’s the one that Luke is helping across the field, just because he got a little booboo on his knee. Sure, okay, maybe the adrenaline's making me a little irritable, and maybe my face is still a little sore, but I'm just about to start explaining the big grand plan I came up with, where we can go back to the cornucopia and demolish whoever's left, when I see where Luke's been leading us.
Luke and Anari stop, probably because of Anari’s leg, but I keep going right to the edge of the lake. But the closer I get, the more I realize that it isn’t quite a lake at all. Because the water looks solid? And I’m no scientist, but I’m pretty sure water isn’t supposed to be solid.
“Whoa.”
I'm pretty sure I’ve never seen this much ice in my life.
Actually, if it's not in a tall glass on a summer's day, I don't think I've really seen ice at all. I saw the 78th though, I remember watching it when I was little, when a whole bunch of us from the orphanage had crowded around the screen outside to watch Bella. There was a whole heck of a lot of snow in that arena, but that’s about where my cold weather expertise ends. Ten doesn't really get snow, or at least it hasn't in the fifteen years that I've lived there. We just get a gross kind of slush, and I don't think that counts.
I kneel down and put my hand flat on the ice.
Yep, just as I thought. It's cold. Very cold.
“D’you think I could walk on it?” But Luke’s busy trying to fix Anari’s leg, and Anari’s busy complaining about Luke fixing his leg, so I just go for it.
I put one foot down first, just to test out the weight, I’m not that stupid. But when nothing happens, I take it as a good sign. Test number two - I stomp on the ice as hard as I can, just to make sure it's super duper safe. When it doesn't crack, I grin.
I'm five paces out before I know it, shuffling my feet and slipping around a little.
“Hey Luke!! Anari!! Look at me!”
I wave at them and move a little quicker, letting my feet glide across the surface.
Weapons can wait for now. Maybe I can convince some uppity Capitolite to sponsor me some skates, then we can have some real fun.
