just a day at a time {Sorrel & Carbon day 2}

She runs, feet pounding through the snow until she can't run anymore. Ribs ache begging for a break, each breath catches in the back of her throat. Frigid air sets her lungs on fire, and all Sorrel can do is lean forward with her hands on her knees sucking in as much air as possible. The echoing of a broken heart throbs in her mind, and cheeks burn red. This place is a nightmare, and losing a friend because she made a mistake is the worst nightmare of all.

It's impossible to know what she did wrong, and the idea of messing everything up sets heavily on her mind. It's a weight she doesn't want to carry, yet Sorrel knows the only option is to keep it there so nobody can steal her away again.

Every muscle quivers, and it's cold, and all she knows to do is to keep going. Like the cold nights back home when the snow covered the ground, stopping only led to death, and stopping now would also lead to death. But it's hard to move. Every bone aches. Her hands are stiff, and her fingers are burning, and keeping them warm is becoming an impossible task. This place isn't meant to survive, and right now all she wants is to cover up and find a place to hide.

She doesn't even know where Carbon is, or if he's still alive, yet it doesn't matter to her. Clearly he didn't want her around, and if that was the case all he had to do was say something. Caring isn't a weakness, but he made it seem that way. All he cared about was himself. Nothing matters anyway.

All it takes is another step, and she's crashing down beside a tree. If Masau wasn't at her side, Sorrel would certainly perish, but the faithful wolf walks up and sits beside her, and all she can do is hide her face in his fur and sob. This isn't how she wants to die, however, it's better than going on knowing she's made a mess of things. She only hopes her family understands that all she can do is take this one day at a time.
