E L I S E
A strum echos softly from calloused fingertips. Here in this secluded den, Elise sings to herself and the wind. Here where lilac flowers dance and leaves make music. This is where Elise feels right, feels safe. The crickets join her early evening serenade as the sun creeps farther and farther down.
You and I go hand in hand with being terrified
and if this is all that it is, then I want off this ride
You and I go hand in hand with being petrified
and if this is all that it is, then I'm wasting my time
Elise spins around now as she loses herself in the song. She doesn’t even care if she messes up a few times. If she does, she doesn’t even notice. The gravel under her feet crunch as she spreads her legs apart, bracing herself for the chorus.
I will never be okay with this kind of unstable life
I will never win the war despite how hard I think I fight
No matter any move I make I just can't get it right
But you know just what they say, out of sight, out of mind
Before she knows it, she’s tearing up. She doesn’t know why. Suddenly she hears everything around like it’s been amplified with a speaker. The grass is loud and the birds are screaming and damn, has her head always had a thumping in it like this? Tears spilled beyond the brim of her eyes but she quickly wiped them away with her scratchy sleeve. It wasn’t about the song, she’s sung it a million times. It wasn’t anything specific that triggered these emotions, at least that Elise can imagine. Sometimes you just get overwhelmed and that’s okay.
Sitting back down on the ground beneath her, she smiled, strumming the strings so lightly they barely make a sound. She was supposed to go to the market and return home with some barley. That was hours ago. It wasn’t an accident either; both the fact she took her guitar and took a route that passed by the park, there could be no debate as to how she ended up here in this secluded area. And while she was here, she’d make the most of it. Mom could wait.
