Half-aware, half-delirious, he feels someone’s hand make a vice-like grip around his wrist and drag him away.

Luke Hailsham feels adrift, like a creature caught between the realm of the living and that of the dead. He should be dead, right? The blood pouring out from beneath him seemed to agree, each heartbeat making him bleed more and more. His eyes, half-lidded, cannot bear how bright the winter around him is.

Only after they’re away from the others, does the pain set in. It’s an inferno, a fever burning away the cold, and by the time Piper’s arms loosen, Luke lets himself feel the snow underfoot, biting down tears for Piper’s sake.

He’s a boy torn apart, hacked at.

and a boy is only a haunting.

But it is thoughts of Wade and the white wedding Piper has told him before that makes Luke grit his teeth and reach for his healing supplies, fingers trembling all the way. He couldn’t die here, not when he had so much to live for. Well, not much, but enough, enough, enough. He is a boy torn apart, but he can also be a boy remade, sewn back together, a patchwork of tragedies.

“Don’t throw up on me, Pipes,” he pants.
