"Please..."

It's supposed to be a polite word that your mom taught you when you are two years old and you wanted to pet the little kitten the neighborhood cat lady would walk by you with. When I wanted to talk to her. It was a word that I was supposed to say when I wanted to do something that you wanted of someone else, no matter what it was.

"Please..." The word reverberated in my skull moments after I swung my weapon. When I watched it fly with so much more passion then I've ever done these entire games. My heart was never in it. I watched others take the lives of another but this time, there was something much bigger than myself and she was probably within ten feet of me and facing her own demons like I was.

Luke wouldn't move.

He kept standing in my way of getting to Sorrel and for some reason, he stopped moving like I wanted. I wanted him out of the way but not quite like this. I, myself, feel stunned. The entire world coming to a sudden halt as my body ran cold and I can feel my heart beat quickening in a fashion of fear. "No - I didn't mean t..."

I glance around, wondering if anyone saw it. It's like when I was a child and did something terribly wrong in my parents eye and I begged the world to reverse itself, but things can never happen that way.

This is reality and I just ended a man's life when it wasn't mine to take - again. This time, my heated anger took over for the briefest of moments and I looked to my weapon with fear. "Shit..." And the sound of the cannon fire echoed in my ear confirming what I had just done, but I asked nicely. I told him what I needed to do and he didn't do it. He was nothing but a bully in my face keeping me from helpi-

"SORREL!" It all comes to a head now and I realize that even though Luke is now gone, there's two people somewhere else still fighting and like I promised him, I would make her feel the pain she's causing my ally, Sorrel.

Fingers quaking at my side, still holding onto the spiked weapon now coated with a fresh layer of death, I move to where I hear Piper yelling at Sorrel. My actions caused her to start screaming over and over. The words just echo ten times louder and louder into my head and there's nothing I can do because the the moment I feel like I've found where they were coming from, all I can see is a clear view of the altercation.

And I see her eyes staring directly at me through these shards of ice. Several sets of eyes and they are all blaming me. I will not be made to feel guilty. He chose his fate. And I watch helplessly as she turns her eyes away from me and back to Sorrel with bloodlust in her eyes and I realize that this will not come out the way I'd hoped. I would not be protecting her till the very end because the gamemakers thought this was some sick joke to separate us and keep me within reaching distance to help but forced to watch every moment of her demise.

"DON'T YOU DARE... I SWEAR TO RIPRED I'LL RIP YOUR HEAD OFF IF YOU..." I can't finish my sentence as I watch the weapon dig into her chest and the sound of bone seems to be heightened with my senses. "You'll regret this Piper, I will kill you like I killed him. I will make you regret touching her."

And I draw my fingers against my weapon and feel my heart shattering. The weapon flies into the icy walls keeping me apart from saving Sorrel. It doesn't shatter. So I pull the barbs from the ice, jerking it back and ready it again, watching all these mirrored reflections of something I couldn't control.

CRACK!

"PIPER, Stop!"

CRACK!

"SORREL... don't let her win."

CRACK!

"I'm coming to help!"

I'm not going to make it - and I keep trying to break the ice.

A heart shatters, and Sorrel stands in place not moving. It's hard watching people die, watching them fall, and all she wants is for this to end. To find the escape hatch and enter the world from this horrible nightmare she's been placed in. Her hands shake at her side, and the tears fall even harder. This place is meant to break people, to tear them apart, to destroy them, but she refuses to let them. Every bad thing must eventually come to an end, and it's drawing near. Everywhere she turns death stares at her. Darkness filled with sorrow bounces through each reflection sucking the soul from her body, but with each step, Sorrel does what she can to survive.

Piper snaps, and she barely hears anything she's saying, yet the rage is true. It's sitting awkwardly inside her chest. All she can do is find a place to hide, but hiding doesn't solve anything. Instead it'll make her look weak. It'll destroy every last thing she's searching for.

And for a moment everything is silent, and the only thing she hears is Piper mocking her. A broken heart crumbles, and in this moment nothing else matters. Caring isn't bad. It's nothing that can stop her. Then she hears Carbon begging her to fight. Begging to her to win, and it's hard cause she's afraid. Afraid to take a life and ruin everything she's fought for. Afraid to devour the world around her. Afraid to step back and rethink everything. Running away sounds like such a plan right now.

But why?

All her life she's been told everyone has a purpose, and right now it seems hers is to die in the hunger games. But maybe it's not? What if there's more to it?

Instead of crying out with pain, Sorrel stands there looking at Piper. Death might be calling, but in this moment the only thing that matters is the breaths drawing into her lungs. They might not work much longer, however, giving up isn't an option. It's never an option. Her frail hands wrap around another knife.

"If caring means I have to die, then kill me. Take your shot. I'm wide open." She takes aim watching the different reflections bounce around from one root to another. "But my death will never make up for the innocent lives lost." The knife flies from her hand -

"If it makes you feel better, then what's stopping you?"

A smile spreads across her face. One life isn't worth it, and maybe this lifetime isn't the one Sorrel will grow old in. But maybe she'll live an eternity beyond the sky.

"I'm trying Carbon, but I don't know if it's enough."

Everything slows down to just Sorrel and me. Carbon’s yelling at us from somewhere, but it’s just empty noise, a distraction, and it flows right by.

“SHUT UP.” I still scream at him, at both of them, at Luke. Because I feel like if I stop then I won't be able to start again.

Because there's still a chance - if I can get over there, if I can get to Luke and shake him and make him wake up then we can still get out of here together and everything will be ok, I just have to get through these two.

But Sorrel won't stop talking, trying to guilt me and goad me and it makes me boil, "Stop being so righteous." I shout at her, all wobbly and stupid-sounding, "STOP."

Because I'm not afraid. I'll do it. I will. There's a gnawing in my stomach and Luke isn't here to bide it anymore.

"Innocent?" I say to her incredulously, feel my voice crack and break the same way her bones did, "Luke didn't do anything to you. He didn't do anything to either of you. He was the innocent one, you're the murderers."

Her wrist flicks a knife into my stomach and I gasp, grasping the handle and feeling the sting with every inhale. Maybe killing her will make me feel better, maybe it won't. I thought I'd come into this arena and meet Shy and finally repay him for what he did six years ago. I thought I'd only have one brother-killer to deal with. Now I have three.

I spit blood at Sorrel's feet.

"You'd better hope I die down here, because if I don't-" I point at Carbon and all his reflections, "I'm killing him next."

My body hurts with every thrusting hit against the ice in front of me. It isn't solely one general spot. It's all over that I'm trying to weaken. To break down a fortress, you have to find the weakest point, and that's exactly what I'm trying to do as I watch helplessly on the other side of the rainbow shards that don't seem to give away. The more the barbs infect the ice, the harder it is to see on the other side. Sorrel's face and the ally to my kill is stuck by themselves without my interference.

"Why!?" I scream out, desperate for the gamemakers to hear my plea for the reasoning they decided to make this happen. Why they decided to separate allies and insist upon their only way out to fight like this? "Sorrel!"

My voice again bellows and as I stand in front of the solid sheet of ice, I tire from days of cold. I feel my bones exhausting from my efforts and the weapon falls against my leg as I step closer to the wall. I try to watch, to urge her on with my gentle silent pleas that she might reign victorious somehow but Piper is anything but gentle against the girl; my motive to stay alive.

If she dies, what am I living for?

My chest seizes and I feel heat spreading up my throat. I shove it down with difficulty until I shake my head. I can't give up just yet. Sorrel never gave up on me. She was there every night to bandage my wounds and stitch up my holes. She kept me safe and kept me around and she deserves so much better than I could ever give her. I take a step back and my footing slips as I fall backwards and my vision saunters to the ceiling all too unkindly and I lay there catching my bearings.

My eyes spin with the world and my head swirls with images of their fight. I'm trying to watch them, but it only makes the oncoming headache worse.

"Fuck!" My expression grimaces feeling the absolute pain in my leg when I try to stand and then I notice it. The webbing of the ice shards from the tree's underground roots, just as glassy and opalescent as the rest of this beautiful hell down here. I begin to wonder if the roots were to be shattered, if there might be some way to help.

Separate the two... give me enough time to intervene and take Piper out -

I clasp onto the weapon again, limping forward to find the first of the roots nearest to the wall. Ice will break if you add the right force to it and so I try. I fight against the weakness in my muscles but my heart won't let me stop.

I'll never forgive myself if she dies...

CRACK!

"SORREL I'M SORRY -"

"No. I won't shut up. The only way I will is when you kill me." The words come as a surprise even to her. All her life Sorrel let people walk over her, and use her, and treat her like she was nothing, but she won't let that happen anymore. Each breath is failing her, it's consuming her soul, and the roots are continuously trying to suck her life away. Yet she's not afraid. It's peaceful. The way her limbs are frozen like ice, and the way every feeling is slowly drifting away. It's almost like falling asleep. She dreams of snow falling from the sky, and the angels descending around her rejoicing in a moment to share forever. And the grin that twists across her face is filled with so much joy.

Piper is doing her a favor, but Sorrel can tell it's not enough to drive her over the edge yet.

"I never said he wasn't innocent. Apparently you're too dumb to understand. Twenty-three innocent souls die, and one cursed soul lives, and I don't want to be the cursed soul." She topples over as a bone shoots through her leg, but the pain doesn't exist anymore. A ghost of a figure stares back at her, and Sorrel leans against a root doing whatever she can to stand. If death is going to take her, she's going on her own two feet. Lying down isn't an option, yet she knows that's all it'll take to drift away.

"So stop bellyaching over the loss of someone I didn't kill. I had nothing to do with his death, and maybe just maybe if you would've climbed out of this place you could've saved him." The sound of her own voice is foreign to her, likes it's starting from so far away and in a different language, and Sorrel isn't sure if it's even making sense. Words float through an endless abyss of a mind trying to form sentences together. Somewhere she hears Carbon begging and pleading, yet everyone knows it won't do any good. "Clearly my aim wasn't good before, so I don't know why you stood here and fought me. I didn't do anything to you other than fall into the same hole you did."

Her head swings around dangling forward then to the sides. Every muscle is weak, and holding it up is the hardest part as the rest of her body slows down for the eternal rest Sorrel is looking for. It's a task trying to keep her eyes open, yet she finds herself wrapping her hands around another knife somehow, or maybe it's just air. It's hard to tell right now because her fingers and hands are numb even beneath the warm mittens. A soft, childlike burst of laughter escapes from her lips, and she's trying to hold it all together, yet she knows it's only a matter of time. Delirium is overwhelming, it's driving her insane, but her eyes watch the flowers bloom in the reflections of the giant roots. It's almost like she's home.

"Being mad at me isn't going to bring him back. Be mad at them. The gamemakers." It's beyond her ears, and she can't even tell if the words are real. They all sound so slurred together and fast and maybe they're just above a whisper. The gamemakers are the ones deserving of the wrath, and maybe this is their desire. The Capitol is full of sick individuals anyway.

She staggers around looking through the different roots into the stars above. Faces become clear before shattering into thousands of pieces. Whatever breath she's holding onto is keeping her heart pounding, but it's growing weak. Blood trickles down the side of her face, but it doesn't stop her from smiling. This genuine happiness is hard to come by, and Sorrel isn't sure where it even came from.

Pivoting on her toes she finds Carbon looking like a kaleidoscope twisted into many colors and pieces. He's a true friend always standing by her side, but she doesn't feel pain in leaving him. He has a chance to fight, and she wants him to take it. To go into the arena and come out alive and make a difference in the lives of others. She flashes a toothy grin and turns once more and releases the knife as she does.

Maybe dying isn't too bad. The grim reaper is nearly to her, but it doesn't matter. Resisting isn't going to save her; and the only thing to do is embrace it.

Hypocrite, something in me hisses, and it sounds a lot like Jo.

But I've never been reasonable, I've always just picked a direction and let my anger explode that way.

"If you didn't want to get out of here, you wouldn't be trying to kill us."

I can't even tell that she's thrown another knife until I feel it slice across my face. And that right there, that proves it doesn't it? It's just like Shy's friend - they talk big, all about peace and revolution and love, but they're no different. Not really. We're all bad people.

My tears seep into the cut on my cheek and it stings so bad that I start crying all over again.

"You're not a martyr." I say to her lowly, "You can pretend to be a good person, but you're not. You're not any better than me - we're the same."

I wipe my eyes on the sleeve of Enzo's sweater, feel the blood and the salt soak into the wool. My hands are shaking and my legs are shaking, but I don't think it's from the cold anymore. Because I look at Sorrel, and I look at Carbon, and the feeling just gets worse. I feel like I'm about to explode, three steps from the edge, and I'll be fucked if I don't take them both out with me.

Being mad at me isn't going to bring him back, she says, be mad at them, and I break.

"You're the next best thing." I spit, five feet of feral animal, and I grind my heel into the snow, "You should be happy, Sorrel, I'm giving you your wish."

I reel back and set my shoulders and take a breath.

"So just die already. Go. Leave us alone."

I've never felt more useless in my life. This is complete bullshit being stuck on one side watching your ally and friend get beat down and no amount of strength or times I badger this ice wall with is making much of a dent. I just keep thinking and waiting and Piper refused to allow my sacrifice and instead, followed through trying to hurt her again. But Sorrel's stronger than she thinks. She barely is able to do it, but she blocks Piper's incoming attack and for some reason I crack the biggest smile and hope bursts through my heart.

She's not giving up... she's not going to go down without a fight.

My heart soars watching every moment and I wonder if I should continue my beatings against the wall that now looks like a shattered window almost too hard to see out of. The roots are too thick and it seems futile to keep going.

"I'm here, Sor. I'm almost there!" I yell, and draw the club up once more and it sticks itself into the wall, cracking and putting a line through it finally. The first part of hope on my end and I go to jerk it out, but something makes me stop.

Something tells me to stop and watch - my stomach churns and I cup my hands around my eyes to get a better view and my heart stops...

"Please... don't" And my knees grow weaker and weaker and I pull myself away not to watch any longer and pull heavily on the weapon but it won't budge. I keep pulling, begging the weapon to extract itself as I look in on the two girls.

Sorrel - this can't be the end.

Silence rips through the air, and everywhere she turns nothing is there. Fragments of lights flicker before her eyes through the shards glistening on the roots. A frail heart cries for this all to come to an end, yet her soul keeps carrying on. Sound is non existent, words fall on deaf ears, and even though they're loud, a slowing brain can't comprehend. It's harder and harder to focus, colors fade in and out, and many faces stare back at her as she tries finding something to hold onto. Yet they go away in the blink of an eye.

It's quiet, and the cold slowly crawls up her legs spreading like a flame. Steady tears flow down the side of her face, and they're even coming to an end. The flame of life is barely flickering, it grows weak and then becomes strong again, but the strength isn't there to really keep it going.

Each breath is forced, yet they're become weaker and weaker with each breath she breathes. Memories leak down her face as she pictures her family standing before her crying over a grave. Soon the ground will become her home, and she opens her mouth trying to scream, but nothing happens and death halts right before her. It takes every ounce of strength to hold onto the roots to keep herself standing, but the grip is becoming less and less, and it's all she can do to keep from toppling.

A root shatters in the palm of her hands, and her eyes bounce around. Piper is barley visible, and her vision contorts trying to bring her into focus, but Sorrel can't move. She can't do anything other than prepare herself for the final blow.

Only nothing happens.

"I.. I..." Her brain can't function, and words are refusing to form, and everything Piper spews just flies through the silence of the world. Nothing else matters.

Sorrel tries to keep herself steady, but her bones are weak and threatening to crumble under the weight of her frail body, and she's afraid to let go. The roots are the only thing keeping her standing, and right now she needs them all more than ever. Her eyes are closing as she's quickly fading away, and it won't take much to push her over.

Part of her enjoys making Piper angry, but the other half is willing the girl to kill her. Sorrel wants to go home, she wants to escape, yet she doesn't want to take the curse of twenty-three others with her. And maybe this is her choice, to distract her and make her think everything is true, the hypocrisy of it all. Everyone wants to live, and she knows this. A dying soul can only hold on for so long.

"You have... better... that." It takes all her strength to speak those words and they're barely louder than a whisper. Her head droops even lower, and it takes everything to remain standing. To focus on everything. Colors become brighter, and it's hard to see. It's blinding her, and in a world with no color and sounds, Sorrel wants to flee.

Death blows at the candle, and Sorrel barely flicks another knife before slowly toppling landing on the ground with a thud. Maybe this is the end. Maybe this is how she dies with every ounce of dignity stripped away.

The threads holding her soul together slowly become untethered as she rocks around. Each breath catches in the back of her throat as she forces herself to exhale.

Hope doesn't exist here, yet she wills herself to fight on despite her world quickly coming to an end.

My swing goes wide and she's right there to pick up the slack, another one of her knives landing in my gut, and it makes me stumble back. I let my hand catch me on the wall, watch the blood smear against the glass there and let out a shaky breath.

"Shit-" I choke out, and it's all splintered and warbling and I can feel something wet fall from my mouth, all the red staining my skin and my teeth.

Sorrel lands on the ground after her throw, and maybe I should feel bad about that, but I don't. Because my vision is a little blurry, and there's a pain in my stomach that matches the one along my back and my head is buzzing like it's full of bees. I take a step towards her and lurch to the side, barely catching myself and then all of a sudden I'm over her, looking down at the way she's lying crumpled and the ringing in my ears gets so loud that I have to squeeze my eyes shut.

It's easier when I can't see her. Everything goes dark and the sounds get quieter and then its just me standing alone in that cave. There's no dead brothers, and there's no stupid sisters, and there's no monsters waiting around the corner for me.

When I open my eyes again, Sorrel's still there, still on the ground. And Luke is still there too, still on the ground.

I swing.

The crack of the ice wall beside me only perks my attention for a moment but my real focus is on the duo inside where I can't reach. My heart is breaking, crumbling the longer I stand here but my muscles, oh how they scream for me to stop everything and sit down. How my body aches from the days of cold and my fingertips how they bleed the more I physically use them to grip the weapon and pound at the ice causing the splits to deepen. My leg screaming in pain the more I use it to step into each hit.

Nothing matters anymore. Nothing matters except getting to Sorrel befor-

And I watch her fall to the ground and she doesn't seem to get up and Piper takes that as her chance to do with her what I did to Luke. Piper better be grateful I made Luke's life end quickly instead of what she was doing to Sorrel. The sheer torture of what she's doing - it's inhumane.

"GET AWAY FROM HER NOW... " I growl and I find a new type of energy and start to jerk the club from the wall again. The small crack that finally came through is my focal point and I get the weapons released. "I'M COMING TO GET YOU PIPER... MARK MY WORDS."

And I swing one hard time against the crack of the wall and it starts to shatter. I hide my face and listen to the last little ping of a shard before I look and shove my way through the wall and Sorrel's body is unresponsive.

I halt in my tracks and turn around, rubbing my face to my hands.

"Damnit... I'm such a fucking failure. I'm so sorry, Sor... "

It's a quiet thing. Not like Anari, not like Luke. Sorrel just goes still, and I just look at her impassively. Numbly.

I can't feel my hands.

There's a great big shattering sound and it makes me jump, hand tight around my weapon again, but its just Carbon. Sorrel's ally. Sorrel's friend.

It's just him hammering at the wall, crashing into it again and again, and I watch the mirrors splinter as he finally starts to break through. When he climbs into the cave, I barely flinch.

Because I know Luke is on the other side, the side where he came from, I know he is, and I know that have to get to him before anyone else does. I need to see him and get him out of here so we can go set up camp. Just like we do every night.

And then I'll tell him about growing up in Ten and he'll tell me about the stars in Four.

Carbon moves around me, and he threatens me, but his voice is waterlogged and it doesn't reach my ears quite right.

I turn to him before I slip away through the hole he made, hand on a piece of shattered wall, letting myself lean on it. He won't kill me, I know. Because I'm going to get out of here. I still have to see the ocean.

"You can try." I mutter softly, all the anger draining out of me and getting replaced by something else, "But come near me again and I'll rip your throat out."
